What is a good mod-combo for me?

Post » Mon Jul 11, 2011 8:09 am

I've played pretty much all the content in Oblivion, so I am looking for something like an overhaul to give it some more life. I have tried mods in the past, but picking my own was too hard, I didn't like having so much control over game rules and I lost interest after I installed a few and got into a loop of testing rather than playing. So I am hoping some people might be willing to suggest some mod combinations for me so I can just pick one, install all the mods and start playing?

Aesthetically, I prefer gritty low-fantasy games and realism with the occasional high-fantasy shock like stumbling across Shivering Isles. Looks are a plus, but not a priority. Compatibility is a big deal. I have not played OOO or FOCM so I would consider those if they are still good choices. I usually play thief characters, but I throw in a school of magic every once in a while.

In order of importance:
  • I'd like the world to seem unfamiliar to some degree
  • I'd like new game content like new quests and NPCs
  • I'd like gameplay tweaks that improve realism/difficulty (in terms of stealth, economy, combat, magic, etc.)

If you are suggesting a list, please put the essentials first and then let me know what other mods I should look at after which are compatable with the essentials you listed. I don't mind looking up and reading about each mod you list, so description are not super important, but do please make sure the mods you suggest actually work together. If you know of a place that already suggests mod combinations for players like me, links to those would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

uniquer landscapes
OOO+ MMM (if you wanna play instead of test this is a more plausible alternative to the full FCOM pack)
Race Balancing Project
less annoying magic experience
Integration: The Stranded Light.
duke patricks combat archery
duke paticks melee mod
DP's magic mod too ( I started using these three recently, so I haven't had long term experience with them, but so far they seem pretty good.)

RBP, LAME, and Integration are made with OOO/FCOM considered (since the mod author uses FCOM. If you want some other recommendations have a look through my generic copy paste.

Here's my generic written thing for these topics. if you want something specific give more details. I ask some questions in the below text as a small guide line:
You were fairly specific so you can if you want to, but you don't gotta.

Its not a mod-combo, its only a list of few mod that im sure you won't have compatibility issue, that don't modify the world itself (except quest award leveller), but make change that make game more enjoyable, without modifying the game itself... no new quest, npc, area or other, only change in user interface, except quest award leveller. Use what phoenix recommended to you with these, im sure it won't cause conflict.

Display stats
Dynamic map
Map marker overhaul
Quest log manager
Quest award leveller
a map mod from the link in my signature for shivering isle
toggleable quantity prompt
Enhanced Hotkeys

Use these with phoenix recommandation, and enjoy, im sure there will be no conflict, 1-3 hour downloading, installing, configuring and testing everything for many many many hour of playing.

Also, you said you wanted economy mod?

Try enhanced economy
I can't guarantee there will be no conflict, didn't tried, but i didn't heard about conflict issue with that mod.

Thanks, very helpful!

Which of the listed quest mods are compatible with this list? Is lost spires compatible for example? Actually, I should be able to figure that out on my own. Thanks :)
The answers to questions:
I've played Oblivion for a couple years, a month or so with mods
Interested in stealth, realism, and limited Shivering Isles and/or Morrowind fantasy.
I like underdog characters, relying on stuff in caves to survive, spend a good amount of time in jail. Rarely evil, but usually with a bounty.
Other than the stuff in the original post, I like simple clean mods with few menus in-game.
I left I think two years ago
I prefer male characters

@ asgard: just saw your post, thanks! I'll check those out also.

Lost spire should be fine, since its one of the best mod out there (if not the best quest mod) and every good modder try at all cost to conflict with such renowed mod.
