Depends on how you see bards. In Fantasy, I see bards as the ultimate JOAT, learning useful tricks and knowledge with each town they pass through. After all, if they're going to retell the greatest stories ever told, they need to live through them first, right?
I could see a bard type character joining a group simply to get to know the members, find out what tales they can share. I could see a bard scavenging ancient ruins, looking for lost bits of lore or ancient artifacts with stories all their own.
A bard can be much more than some spoony guy playing a lute. After all, Loot is generally better than Lute.
