Obsidian and The Elder Scrolls

Post » Wed Jul 13, 2011 2:40 am

I was reading through the Skyrim boards and read something along the lines of how an Obsidian (the company who developed Fallout, and most recently made Fallout: New Vegas) made TES would be. That got me thinking. I quite enjoyed in New Vegas how leveling worked, how the game play mechanics were, and how things in general worked in the game. Now say that the same thing happened to TES. Say Beth gave Obsidian the Creation Engine and told them to make a new TES while they develop a different game. Would you be for or against it? How do you think the game would be? I'm quite interested to see what the forum thinks :)

edit: after reading some posts, say its a spinoff like Redgaurd or New Vegas, not a main game like Morrowind or Oblivion.

As long as Beth would still be developing the main series, and Obsidian developed a "spin-off," similar to New Vegas, then hell yes I'm all for it.

nope,I prefer bethesda's crash-to-update ratio to obsidians "only update when theres new dlc."
Also their games are really buggy and they seem to think shades of grey=good writing.
Instead of making you have to choose between 3 sides that all svck equally, how about letting us choose between factions that are likeable despite their flaws.

EDIT-if its a spin-off then sure whatever.

I thought about this, and... no. Not at all.

I don't really know why, but I don't think that TES (at least, as we know it) can only be made by a ridiculously long development time. Another company doing the same thing wouldn't really work.

Although I wouldn't mind a Redguard-style spin-off. That could be awesome!

I would not want anyone but Obsidian doing this. I feel since they have worked with Bethesda that would give them a plus with familiarity.
Obsidian is a team who always stands their ground on their beliefs and is one of the smaller gaming companies still around, so they are doing something right.
I believe they would bring a uniqueness to the characters and game play. I would rather travel with Khelgar in NWN2 than Oghren in Dragon Age. I also would rather do the hacking in Alpha Protocol than the planet scanning in Mass Effect2. These are just a couple examples to their many creative differences.
Many will bring up bugs in their games but everyone has these. I was very impressed at how well Dungeon Seige played, especially co op. The menus were great and I have liked what they have accomplished in the dialogue wheel. Story has always been a plus for Obsidian and they have been very consistent with this.
Looking at the environments in their games I 100% believe they could handle a beautiful uniqe open world.
They would need the time to do this which I think this is where Bethesda would treat Obsidian with the greatest respect.
I love Obsidian and would wholeheartedly support this.
I would have a hard time with Bethesda handing their baby over at all,or to just anyone if this happened, but Obsidian would be my choice. :)

I would really have to consider it , long and hard. No matter how much I dont fancy some changes and things, there's still the general flavor which is all Beth's, and thats something very hard for another company to get right.

No, I would not like that. On the other hand, give them Fallout 4 and have Bethesda work full time right away on TES VI!

For a spinoff like Redguard sure. Not for a main TES game.

I like New Vegas more than Fallout 3, so take that for what you will. I suppose I'd be fine with a spin-off, so long as they know what they're doing and they respect the lore. But a game in the main series? No.

Very well... I think FNV was better than F3 in every way.

The only thing I'd be worried about was how well they knew the lore of TES universe.

I love New Vegas..way more than Fallout 3. It's one of my favorite games, probably my favorite game from last year. But Obsidian developing the Elder Scrolls? No, that's Bethesda's masterpiece.

The only reason Bethesda let Obsidian develop F:NV was because some of the OE team used to be with Black Isle Studios (Fallout 1/2). F:NV was decent, but I definitely wouldn't want them developing an Elder Scrolls installment.

Don't forget a world design that forces the player to always go in a circle, despite it being open world :P
