Battlemages and Spellswords!

Post » Wed Jul 13, 2011 5:10 pm

Simple enough question really. Battlemages and spellswords have been in many games, ranging from guys who look indistinguishable from warriors but flinging fireballs to ordinary mages that specialise in destructive magic and swordplay. Now that 'classes' are gone, what sort of gear setup does your battlemage use?

I'm currently undecided. If the majority of the heavy armour has a lot of exposed skin, my cold-sensitive dunmer will likely be wearing light armour or just find a good robe and sword.

For me it depends on how much my spell effectiveness is reduced by wearing armor, if that's included this time around.

Light armor with a shield spell or two to compensate for the lack of protection found in heavy armor

OR, if they bring back conjured armor, that will be what I use.

Recently, battlemages have become my 2nd favorite to RP. 100% warrior is 1st. But with my battlemage I usually wear a robe and light armor (helmet, gauntlets, boots)

My little Breton mage/healer is a practical person. She's resourceful and believes in using all the tools at her disposal. She'll mostly be in light armor when walking through the province from one place to another, but when she has to go somewhere like a cave or like an Oblivion gate or something else seriously dangerous, she'll wear Heavy Armor. Walking in town, she'll use her mage's robe which she's enchanted with Fortify Magicka, Forify Health and Shield, if possible.

The agility factor is going to matter more in Skyrim so it may be mostly light armor and robes but it'll be according to the situation, not what her chosen field is.

Light armor to differentiate them from mages and warriors.

I think enchanted light armor is the best.

Heavy armour for maximum protection. And shield spells, for maximum protection plus :D!

Heavy armor, of course. You don't need to go fast, you just need a bigger weapon! Or in this case, a bigger fireball! And a shield. A big steel tower shield.

In oblivion after you got to 75 in the armor skill it really didn't matter much if you were wearing heavy or light armor for casting magic, so I always went with heavy armor since I could always boost my speed with spells and enchantments. However the thing with fallout 3 and new vegas perk/stat system was there is no speed stat, so the only way to maneuver through the game at a fast pace was in light armor. So now with skyrim it will be the same and I will be forced to wear light armor for speed. Hopefully there are some early game companions who can hold my heavy armor that I can switch to once I get into a battle.

The main reason I need speed is I am going to be traveling around a big world and casting spells from a distance. Also there will most likely be a perk for increasing speed in light armor I just hope there is also one for heavy armor...

I'll probably mix a robe with heavy boots and gloves, armed with a katanna, all enchanted of course, and some serious magic! I really hope telekinesis is bio shock style that would rock! If so he will specialise in which ever magical school it's under now!? With my shout of choice fus ro dah-
I can Jedi my way around skyrim as a breten battle mage
Probably be my 3rd character tho. Gotta blast out a nord warrior then a kajiht thief first...

My character will either be going with light armor or no armor at all, and yes, he will be a battlemage.

He'll be pretty sneaky as well :shifty:

I'll probably use a one handed weapon and an alteration or destruction spell, maybe an illusion spell.

I would use light armour, mostly because I am used to the balance of protection and mobility that it provides.

I also plan on swapping frequently between full magic, magic + sword, sword + shield, dual-wielding swords, and perhaps magic + shield.

I have always been quite big on destruction and restoration, but I am sure I'll train all of them (at least for levels, and definitely for utility).

Since I don't have to make any choices right away (Classes being stripped out of char-gen), I'll just go with whichever armour I think look best or has the most beneficial perk trees associated to it. In Oblivion I invariably ended up in light armour though.

I've always gone the Heavy Armor route, using a mix of two-hander melee and touch spells in combat (though I always had at least one reliable ranged spell). This playstyle always felt very "battlemage-y" to me with the focus on touch spells, whereas a full-fledged mage would be the one burning-shocking-freezing enemies from a distance in his/her robes.

Battlemage=Heavy
Spellsword=Heavy

Jeez, go play morrowind. The skills say it all. It shows medium for spellswords but is the heavier kind as shown by it being given heavy in oblivion.

Heavy armour all day. I'll be too busy hurling fireballs, and cracking skulls to bother with that "Shield" crap.

Spell and Sword = Light armor unless you like getting smacked around, instead of dodging attacks

Spell and Shield = ---------- that sounds ridiculous and pointless to me

Sword and Shield = -------- go play warrior or a paladin

Heavy armor - long sword in the right hand, shield spell in the left. I tend to play deffencively. Not sure why, but its been the same in any other game when it's an option.
