Tips for new PC playeré

Post » Mon Jul 18, 2011 5:03 am

Well, just what the title says. I've played fallout ALOT on xbox 360. I recently upgraded my comp, and am now capable of playing it on PC. I downloaded and installed all the patches. But seeing as I'm new to the PC version, I'm wondering if anyone has any tips and suggestions before I start playing.

1. Ive been looking at hooking up a wireless xbox 360 controller for gameplay (just because I'm used to it). So, I guess first of all, are there pros or cons to doing that... and how would i go about doing it? (I did google it, and downloaded a 360 installer, but it seemed to do nothing)
2. Ive downloaded a few mods Id like to use... i have read through a couple of read me files that tell me as an example to "check maddog.esp in your loader" after extracting data to whatever area i need to. ....but, my loader??
...are there any useful tutorials out there to save me asking a bunch more dum questions in the future?
3. Also, the guy at the store when I bought the game said to make sure I select the administrator option on my computer before playing, to get the most out if it. ...I'm not entirely sure how that matters, or how to go about doing it.

Forgive the stupid questions, but I'm not exactly experienced with PC gaming. Any suggestions... on anything useful for a newbie would be appreciated.

Thanks.

1. To use a wireless controller you'll need a wireless 360 adapter to put with it. My search-fu fails right now but you should still be able to find one at Amazon. A wired 360 controller will work straight out of the box. It plays just like does on a 360 with the exception of a slight delay in entering VATS and you can't target grenades on PC.

2. If you're installing any mods at all you'll want to install Fallout Mod Manager from Fallout 3 Nexus. It's an essential utility for installing mods and arranging them into the proper load order.
There is a very useful Video Install guide uploaded by Kai Hohiro but unfortunately Nexus is having issues today and I don't have the Youtube links for them. I'll post them in here when I can.

3. To save yourself a lot of headache, don't install the game into Program Files. Make your own directory somewhere (like C:\Games\Fallout 3) and install it there. UAC tends to cause troubles with the game so it's always best to install outside of Program Files.

Happy gaming!

Great tips. Thanks ;)

None of my previous searches made any mention of wireless adapters, but that was what I had suspected I'd need . I found it on amazon... so far, nothing on websites of local gaming supply stores. Looks like I'll have to order one. I haven't used a mouse since quake 1. lol

Found the mod manager and downloaded it, and found the install guide videos you mentioned after searching nexus. ...I'll give them a watch before I go any further.

As for the location of the game install... Being as the default install point is in program files, is it good enough to simply cut and paste it into a different location... or do I need to completely uninstall, and re-install in said new location?

I would uninstall the game completely from the program files and make a clean install in C:\Games\Fallout 3 folder for best results. You might want to get BOSS and FOSE from Fallout Nexus too. Boss helps with your load order and FOSE is needed to run some mods you might want.
