Film viewing suggestion: The 13th Warrior

Post » Mon Jul 18, 2011 10:39 pm

I just thought I'd mention this film as a suggested viewing for those who may want to get a good feel for the environment of Nordic culture. It is a beautiful film on many levels, as well as an excellent portrayal of cross cultural conflicts and eventual understanding and acceptance.

The book (Eaters of the Dead) is better, imo. Still, the movie is definitely worth watching for the atmosphere.

It's a cool film, with very epic moment (the speech before the last battle is quite EPIC)... there are some very stupid things (MINISPOILER: when the Muslim made the cimitar), but it's worth to be seen. A nice film.

The 13th Warrior is a good suggestion. I've heard of it, but haven't seen it before. Is this the film with Antonio Banderas in it?

That films a few years old, but I really enjoyed it when it was released. Personally, I would recommend all ten episodes of Game of Thrones.

Pro tip: members who want to keep their accounts shouldn't derail threads by insulting other members. People responding: please just report it and don't clutter it up with off-topic discussion!

[on topic] I quite enjoyed the 13th Warrior. Outlander's seriously dodgy but quite fun in a b-movie sort of way. I'd additionally recommend Pathfinder, starring Karl Urban and Moon Youngblood (T4) - it's about an attempted invasion of North America by Nords in the Middle Ages.

Shame they don't make more Viking style movies. I can only think of a few... Beowulf, The 13th Warrior, Pathfinder, Valhalla Rising, etc.

Just kidding...Thor was awful and had nothing to do with Vikings. :jammasterjay:

You may like http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097289/, but it is just as likely you will hate it. An acquired taste.

How to train your dragon wasn't a bad viking film (and not just "for a kids film" good)

I saw 13th Warrior in my high school English class. I agree it could help with roleplaying.. That is if you plan on playing a Nord barbarian which I'm sure most people are.

Yeah, I like it too. Some good locations and production design. Perhaps not the best script though, still better than pathfinder though. Personally I didn't like that one, overly stylized, bad design, and it just has this dirty look to it that in a lot of scenes you can't even make out whats on screen. Bad script too.

Well, not in the atmosphere in terms of the mature setting and stuff

But more the Dragons and Nords kind of hype mode
