Cover System, how does it work?

Post » Wed Aug 26, 2009 1:17 am

Is it just context based, or is it linked to the SMART system?

Here, I'll explain it as simply as possible

find object, hide behind it.

I just described how cover works in Brink.

For the Xbox 360, you get behind something and hold left bumper and then move the right stick to peek above and around objects, i think. I played it but never really did that, so I cant remember the controls. I know it was something of that idea(holding the bumper and using an anolog stick)

Note: This is NOT the cover mechanic, it is a leaning mechanic - an optional system. Seeking cover is still nothing more than crouching behind something.

Ah, I was thinking it was a branch of the cover method. Seeing as you can peek out behind cover.

Yes, you can peek out behind cover, but it isn't NEEDED to seek cover. That's what I was making clear. It is something you can do once you are behind cover.

Lean and Peak is a very basic cover system for FPS....You could call it "cover system 101" for FPS. In this case there is no button like in Gears or R6V but you can slide into cover using the SMART system and then lean and peak from the cover. This is more similar to Killzone 2 and Crysis 2 and nothing compared to Gears or R6V.

A suitable cover would be something like a huge metal plate and not something like a tin can/magazine/enemy turret etc.

Breach

Not out yet, but comming to XBLA soon

Uses 3rd person view when you take cover, then when you peak out to shoot, back to 1st person.

Only way to make it work.

Otherwise, in FPS only view, you really are limited to peak and lean for cover... and lots of games don't even have that.... it's crouch toggling or strafing in and out of cover.

Killzone 2 and Crysis 2 has it. I have a Xbox 360 so the lean and peak isn't common on the console. R6V1 & R6V2 are hybrid of 1st Person Shooter with 3rd Person Cover system. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BR3EH7j8kP0& This Crysis 2 Video that shows the cover system in FPS. Also here is list of many games with cover systems for the PS3, Xbox 360 & PC. Is is a great resource. http://www.giantbomb.com/cover-system/92-55/. Enjoy!

@Ronin0ni. I forgot Breach. Thanks

1st person cover system, where u glue yourself to a cover so u can lean and fire or even blind fire is found in "red orchestra : heroes of stalingrad" (which isnt out yet) and it looks brilliant. watch all the demonstrations in Gametrailers.com. other than that i think Killzone 2 has something like that.

my issue is - will leaning and staying behind cover be something u WANT to do in Brink? cuz the game doesnt penalizes moving around while shooting if u aim down the sights. when that's the case than a moving target is harder to hit than a concealed but stationary target. in 99% of the games u better run , strafe and jump while firing to be harder to hit than stay behind cover , lean and shoot like you would in real life. very few games try to do what Flashpoint or ARMA2 are trying to do (penalize players for trying to walk and shoot) and these 2 FPS games are the only ones i can think of that actually reward players for using cover rather than running and jumping like bunnies with guns.

The problem with Flash point is that it acts more like a military simluation than a a military game. I know many people who played it said you have to be Navy Seal or Delta Force to really know the game and its tactics. It is 100% the other way in regards to tactics...complete opposite from COD. Personally, this game is way too over the top for me in regards to tactics. I light the middle ground when it comes to my gaming. Something that requries good tactics, cover system and team work, but I don't have to an expert to have fun and get results.
