Self healing companions

I noticed that with Dogmeat, that after a fight, no matter his health, his health will automatically refill itself, without using a stimpack and I just got Clover and was wondering, will her(or any other companion's) health go back up by itself after a fight? I find it annoying that I would have to stick stimpacks in their inventory for them to use, and not very well at that either, and that I can't give them a stimpack by myself. Also, if they use a stimpack, does it fix their limbs?

(I'm playing the GOTY edition on the 360)

Yes their health will replenish after combat.
Putting Stimpacks in their inventory will help them survive in combat,as they will stop fighting and use them.
IIRC the Stimpacks they use in combat will work as though you were in the menu and used one on yourself to "heal all",so it will mostly replenish health and repair damaged limbs a small amount.
