If playing a truly great RPG (one of my, if not even the, favorite games, and the Fallout setting appeal to you and are enough to you, you'll be fine with it. However, keep in mind that the gameplay design and intent are wholly different from Fallout 3 and New Vegas -- so, for a newcomer, it might take some getting used to.

That said, though, give it a fair shot. It is a really rewarding RPG experience.

Well like you I was in love with 3 when I started to wonder about the originals. So I picked up Fallout 2 on steam and Fallout 1 a while later. I thought they were really hard and hard to get used to. So I didnt play em for about 2 months. Then I came back and I got hooked, mostly with the help of an amazing guide. I played for hours and hours till my save got corrupted on Fallout 2. Then I proceeded to beat Fallout 1. Now Fallout 1 is one of my favorite games of all time. I dont know if you will like it, it varies from person to person. New Vegas is really close to the originals, so you might end up enjoying it.

Nope, you can use a separate trainer though. But I'd advice not to do so, only if you're really stuck or you want to test certain scenarios.

Plus if you don't know what you're doing, messing around with quests, maps, items, etc. can cause savegame corruption.
