I think it's that new Troll Technology that causes older TES games to retroactively become terrible games when the newest game is released. Must be an interview somewhere?

I hope that Skyrim is as deep and immersive as Morrowind was. Honestly, after returning to Morrowind recently after playing lots of Oblivion....Oblivion seems a little bit like a dumbed down Elder Scrolls. I hope they do a little ore with Skyrim, as it appears they are. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE Oblivion, but it definitely doesn't match with the amount of content Morrowind has or even the epic feeling to some of the dungeons or quests. Although the Dark Brotherhood quests in Oblivion were by far my favorite out of all the Elder Scrolls. Hoping for some more DB stuff in Skyrim! :tes:

Beat? That's a strange choice of word. It's a different game with different concepts. I will probably play both Skyrim and Morrowind for years to come, but not for the same reasons. And if it's better in every single aspect, then let us rejoice.

To me, Oblivion didn't "beat" Morrowind and I have no particular expectation that Skyrim will either. If it does, great; how can that be bad?

I NEED Skyrim to be better. TES III: Morrowind has held the title of Best Game Ever on my list for almost a decade, and it's well past time for it's de-throning. Seriously, nine years of having no other game come along that's more fun, really svcks. :P

Although, no matter what happens with Skyrim, the game I'm looking forward to most is the one after it. *crosses his fingers for Sumerset Isle*

Each game adds it's own uniqueness, and I don't believe one beats the other. I do believe that we have one that is our favorite playing and Morrowind was it for me. I'm hoping Skyrim will give me the gaming experience I had with Morrowind.

I do not consider the concept of Skyrim somehow surpassing Morrowind to be sad and/or a bad thing. While I continue to play morrowind I would like to see any good TES installment to be a success with its own feel and playstyle to avoid playing essentially the same copy and paste games to keep things interesting and innovative (if creating a rather http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BrokenBase fandom).

Sure I would look favorably at Morrowind (but not so blindly as to not see its flaws) I would like to see Skyrim succeed at both new gameplay mechanics as well as depth that I come to expect from a TES game as a great game judged by its own merits independent of any previous installments.

They're both going to have their own strengths and weaknesses. I don't see why the concept of one beating the other even has to come up.

It'd be cool, but I've pretty much nailed Morrowind to my 'favourite game of all time' slot. Ain't nothing taking it down :D

Morrowind is a great game to mod, and will ever be. However, I agree Skyrim will be better for the actual gameplay experience. But why would I be sad about that? I like games being better than awesome games.

It took Oblivion being released for me to appreciate just how special Morrowind was, and for me to articulate a lot the things that I enjoyed so much about it. Skyrim will be a decent game, maybe, but the more information that gets released the more I realize it will never be the successor to Morrowind I'd hoped for five years ago. Evidently I'm not the target audience and I've come to accept that.

I have several modding projects that keep me creative, and plenty of content and I still wish to experience with new characters. I will be ecstatic to be proven wrong but I do not forsee Skyrim surpassing Morrowind, and even in the event that it comes to pass, it won't stop me from enjoying Morrowind.

I look forwards to Skyrim, and hopefully Skyrim will be such a success that it ensures even more TES games in the future.

Skyrim will have to be good. I'm still happy modding Morrowind. Wonder if they'll dumb it down for console.... I think they refer to it as "Making it more accessible".

Morrowind is my favorite game of all time, and I would welcome any game that I truly find "better" than it. I don't have much faith that it will happen, but more power to Skyrim if it does. Having two games I enjoy as much as Morrowind would be a welcome thing indeed.

i KNOW skyrim will be better

Haha, what? Have you played it already?!

I'm sure Skyrim is going to be awesome and I hope it's better! Progress in TES is great! From what I've seen it already looks better than Oblivion (and I love Oblivion) but I do not worry about such trivial things.
All TES games are awesome, who cares which one is "best" ?

Its not like Skyrim will prevent anyone from playing or enjoying Morrowind.

Exactly.
When Oblivion came out, everyone was worried that Morrowind would be forgotten... yet that game did nothing to slow down the modding or playing of Morrowind.
The modding community is very strong here, Skyrim will distract and enthrall us, but Morrowind will not be forgotten.

EDIT: threads like this always make me laugh. OP makes an account, proposes a question, and then never seems to come back to discuss further.

I don't think Skyrim will bring back the feelings I had when I first played Morrowind but I think it will be enjoyable.

You put it in such a matter-of-fact way, OP. I find it hard to believe that anything will "beat" Morrowind. I certainly don't see Skyrim being the game to do that, and I'm one of the people who has almost completely supported the decisions being made for Skyrim.

If Skyrim matches Morrowind, then I will be very, very surprised. If it "beats" Morrowind, as you put it, I'd be shocked as hell. If it falls short of Morrowind, I will not hold it against Skyrim for a second. I think it's unfair to expect it to beat Morrowind, but that's just me, and you might have different feelings toward Morrowind.

That said, I'm almost positive that I will love Skyrim, the same as I love every Elder Scrolls game I've played.

It is going to be very tough for anything to beat Morrowind in my book. First off is the issue of sequel syndrome. Even when you are the same person or people who made the original, it is extremely difficult to replicate a certain kind of success.

So, when a person sets out to create something, a novel, a movie, a game; it is usually the intent to create something epic, timeless and special. This doesn’t occur just because of that intent. It occurs because, almost as if by magic, the stars align and every element just comes together and “works” on a level that is above what might be expected by just examining various elements. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

One might also consider that priorities have changed in this decade. Now, much focus is placed on a fully voice acted experience. This takes time away from other things that I might consider more important. Thus, in my opinion, we see (at least potentially) why Oblivion fell down a bit in comparison to MW. Was it a good game? Certainly. However, it lacked the intricacy of the former game especially in terms of complex storylines intertwining with each other and the loads of lore that defined the land. Various other elements were also weaker, but all a matter of opinion, of course. I never felt the same sense of wonder in Oblivion for whatever reason. I never felt the wanderlust to walk off the beaten path just to see what’s over that hill. And I hated how the game leveled with you.

Surely, however, the intent was never to make a weaker game than Morrowind!

Saying that something could potentially “beat” Morrowind would be like saying some movie would eventually “beat” a timeless classic such as The Godfather. Or Casablanca.

Good luck with that. :)

X-Com UFO defense came out in the early 90s and often ranks highly on a given "best game of all time" list. After all this time, where is the game that has ever beaten it?
