Why do so many people dislike Altmer?

Post » Sun Jul 24, 2011 11:32 pm

They the most powerful with magic, they live the longest, they live where elves originally arrived in Tamriel, they're considered to be the most intelligent, etc.

Why do so many people dislike them?

I guess it could be their haughty demeanor towards other races. Especially against the beast races. I never found them aesthetically pleasing being all tall and yellow.

Indeed, a race of tall, yellow racists, but not cool racists like the Dunmer.

Are you calling the Dunmer cool, or saying their kind of racism is cool?

of course it is! nothing like enslaving the beast folk. The Altmer on the other hand enslave poor goblins and use them for fodder in battle :(

I like the Altmer. I like how they look, I like their historical significance, I like their magical prowess, even feeling of superiority. Hell of a lot more earned than that of the Dunmer, who I think just hate other races on basic principle.

They could stand to be improved though, I'd like to see them realize the benefits of having Orcs as allies.

Altmer are actually my favorite kind of elf. (Not counting Orcs anyways.)

I find them interesting - i'm just more interested in the Bosmer and Dunmer as far as elves go.

The Altmer are holding back the mortal races from true achievements. Killing them and sacrificing their souls to Daedra is doing both them and the world a favor.

Last I checked, unless I missed something, 'twas not an Altmer who seized control over a 1,000 foot-tall Dwemer construct and proceeded to unleash it on anyone who wouldn't submit to their rule. Also wasn't an Altmer who enabled said person to do so.

Last I checked, 'twas not a line of Altmers who ruled the Tamrielic Empire for four centuries. Ocato was an Altmer, and headed the Elder Council, but he was no Emperor. And his rule, if you can call it that, was taken from him by an Imperial. (I'm assuming Titus Mede was an Imperial, even if he was not, he doesn't sound like an Altmer.)

Last I checked, 'twas never the Altmers who ever ruled the whole of Tamriel. Indeed, no province of the Third Era, or Fourth (as far as I know) suffers from being conquered by Altmers.

Last I checked, 'twas not an Altmer who once dwelled beneath Red Mountain, brainwashing their own people, with the intention of ruling over them one day.

So, do you care to explain to me how the Altmers are so responsible for oppressing everyone else?

(I'll grant you that Mannimarco and Mankar Camoran were certainly trouble-makers, since you'll probably bring them up. I'd also argue that the majority of the Altmer race wouldn't back them up on their goals.)

The altmer want nothing more then the destruction of the mortal world. They would erase Talos and destroy mankind just so that they can go back to before creation. Even in the fourth Era the Thalmor are undermining Titus Mede's attempts at restoring the Empire, and now, in the time of TES:V, the Time Dragon threatens to undo all progress that mortals have made. The Altmer now have the perfect opportunity to strike, and thereby eradicate Mankind and Talos. The sooner we wipe them from Nirn, the faster we save mortals from being forced backwards.

Oh sure, plenty of Altmer have more earthly concerns, but for them, the mortal world is a prison. It's creation was a cruel trick. The only way to get out and get back is to tear the walls down.

This :)

Altmer are obnoxious in their racism, Dunmer make an art out of it! :D

I might like them more if they weren't yellow and seven feet tall.

Also, they are always trying to end the world, because they view the mortal plane as a prison.

That makes them even harder to trust than the Argonians with their Hist hive-mind thing.

I mean yeah, they are interesting, but not so much so that I want to lose my existence because they have a grudge.

Yeah, but at least we know what the altmer are aiming at. The Hist are kinda of a mystery in terms of their long-term objectives and goals, not to mention that their not descended from the Ehlnofey. It's like having aliens from Proxima Centauri as next door neighbors.

I would argue the destruction of Talos is hardly a bad thing. He WAS Tiber Septim after all, and Septim subjugated ALL the races.

and destroy mankind just so that they can go back to before creation.

Before their own creation? I doubt that. If anything, they'd like to go back to when they were on top, or perhaps even alone in Tamriel. Hard to imagine the Dumer not sharing that sentiment.

Even in the fourth Era the Thalmor are undermining Titus Mede's attempts at restoring the Empire, and now, in the time of TES:V, the Time Dragon threatens to undo all progress that mortals have made.

And the Altmer are responsible for that? Hah! More like Alduin/Akatosh being as schizo as Sheogorath/Jyggalag.

The Altmer now have the perfect opportunity to strike, and thereby eradicate Mankind and Talos.

Doubtful that they could do so, even if that were true. Which I also doubt.

The sooner we wipe them from Nirn, the faster we save the other races from getting pwned.

Fixed it for you. :P

I'd say they're more like 6'6" - 6'8" on average.

Also, they are always trying to end the world, because they view the mortal plane as a prison.

Could've swore that was the Dwemer.

That makes them even harder to trust than the Argonians with their Hist hive-mind thing.

Given how no one but the Hist seem to know their will, I'd say no.

"Auri-El (King of the Aldmer): The Elven Akatosh is Auri-El. Auri-El is the soul of Anui-El, who, in turn, is the soul of Anu the Everything. He is the chief of most Aldmeri pantheons. Most Altmeri and Bosmeri claim direct descent from Auri-El. In his only known moment of weakness, he agreed to take his part in the creation of the mortal plane, that act which forever sundered the Elves from the spirit worlds of eternity. To make up for it, Auri-El led the original Aldmer against the armies of Lorkhan in mythic times, vanquishing that tyrant and establishing the first kingdoms of the Altmer, Altmora and Old Ehlnofey. He then ascended to heaven in full observance of his followers so that they might learn the steps needed to escape the mortal plane." -From Varieties of Faith.

And a Kirkbride post:

"To kill Man is to reach Heaven, from where we came before the Doom Drum's iniquity. When we accomplish this, we can escape the mockery and long shame of the Material Prison.

To achieve this goal, we must:

1) Erase the Upstart Talos from the mythic. His presence fortifies the Wheel of the Convention, and binds our souls to this plane.

2) Remove Man not just from the world, but from the Pattern of Possibility, so that the very idea of them can be forgotten and thereby never again repeated.

3) With Talos and the Sons of Talos removed, the Dragon will become ours to unbind. The world of mortals will be over. The Dragon will uncoil his hold on the stagnancy of linear time and move as Free Serpent again, moving through the Aether without measure or burden, spilling time along the innumerable roads we once travelled. And with that we will regain the mantle of the imperishable spirit."

Sounds about as crazy and maniacal as the Mythic Dawn.

However, how recent/current is this line of thinking among the Altmer, and as well, how prominent? Much of history in Tamriel, just as in our world, is skewed, and when you factor in their mythology, well...

Suffice to say I think there are more distortions in the lore of Elder Scrolls than truths.

As has been said, Altmer view the creation of Mundus as trickery and view the mortal plane as a prison. In fact, most mer do in general (you mentioned the Dwemer) except for Altmer. Men are in contrast to this, except Redguards.

http://www.imperial-library.info/content/morrowind-monomyth-altmeri-heart-world

We don't know how many Altmer believe in this, but I'd say it's the main belief (aside from a few possible hidden Lorkhan cults that might exist, as well as the ones who converted to the Nine; but they might not do so well under the Dominion.) It's one of the foundations of their religion.

Well, I can't say I necessarily blame them for wanting to "correct" certain things in that case. If I thought with every fiber of my being that I would be a god absent of the existence of others, I just might consider taking steps to remove those others.

And let's be fair: Pretty much all the religious foundations in Tamriel are kooky at best. What matters most is how strong the destructive movements are, and how much success their actions are met with.

Unless I missed something, Altmers collectively haven't done much towards these supposed goals. Dunmer have definitely made slaves of other races (though I believe Altmer have as well), and the Imperials have definitely imposed their rule on others.
