Playing as purely a mage

Just as stealth needs sneak and warriors need Armor, Mages need conjuration. Summon something large like an Atronach in a hallway, use heal other to keep it alive, shield spells for him, and use ranged attacks. If you need to block summon a shield + dagger, then dispell it after. Thats how I played in oblivion. Sometimes I would use a summoned weapon to apply a poison. Magic is versatile, its generally not very effective to just spam destruction spells.

Exactly. I used Daedroths and Storm Atronachs to distract the enemy while I shot a variety of destruction/restoration spells from the background. It worked in every single situation except for Mankar Camoran. I was roleplaying with a Daedroth at the time, and he couldn't keep up against the respawning son and daughter. Mankar himself would often reflect my spells, and my character had high level destruction spells, but little health... a bad combo. I also roleplayed by not carrying more then a few potions at any time, and never carrying a weapon or armor. I remember that battle lasting like fifteen minutes. Raven and Ruma probably died twenty times each before I was lucky enough to get a couple spells on Mankar to take him down.

Not use magic at all. Hate magic. Hate mages. Hate TES idea of how magic works in their world.

But TES is magical, MonkeyKing, MAGICAL :o

I had no problem playing a pure mage in Oblivion. It's really not at all difficult - it just requires a different set of strategies.

As far as I'm concerned, it's a shame that it's apparently going to be even easier in Skyrim.

I personally found it very hard to play as a mage in oblivion without the aid of a sword or bow. Has anyone heard or expecting what the deal is gonna be with this. Will we generally have to use one hand for sword and the other for magic? or do you think we will be able to play through with duel magic? Also I would like to know if you will be able to duel weild different spells for example ice in your left hand and fire in the other. Or will you have to use both hands to do the same spell.

With dragon shouts and 280 perks, I think it will be a lot more fun to play a pure mage, pure warrior, pure thief or pure assassin build.

To be honest, I'm kind of bored of playing hybrid characters. I never tried for example a pure warrior with absolutely no casting or enchanting ability in Oblivion.

I was going to go around as a Battlemage of sorts, but if there is really no Spellmaking then I probably won't. On my last Oblivion character, he used Bows, Destruction, and Sneak as his best skills. Sneak up slowly, shoot them in the back, when they see you, burn them with fire. Works out great.

Damage on touch spells. It costs less and packs a harder punch, so you could use those in melee combat.
