Campaign to bring back the politics!

Post » Wed Aug 26, 2009 7:33 am

One thing that was missing entirely from TES IV was the politics and intrigue that made non combat quests in morrowind amazingly fun, the tensions between guilds, the political quests to gain favor and the great dialog where often better than the combat quests, i would like to see a new focus on these style of quests in TES V, the lack of them seems to feel like pandering to casuals and it irks me that my favorite part of the series is completely lacking

Well, since the trailer implied some manner of civil war I would safely assume there will be some manner of political stuff.

Still it's an awesome point. Morrowind's political games and quests were aplenty and interesting as a kicker

yeah the only politics in Oblivion was convincing the dukes to lend you support, and that ended up being like all combat

Except there is a line between actual politics between groups, maneuvering for positions of power, offering promises of gold, alliance, ect, and then there is the politics of OB which really amounted to nothing more then "I fight good, you join me" and sure enough, those who heard you say this joined you.

Political needs to be in if it is to be a Civil War, perhaps the player has to regain the trust between the two sides to help fight off the Dragons who knows. But yeah Politics is a must, especially for immersion as it would be nice to know that politicians or dukes do something in the game, and not just sit down on their throne and go back to bed.

By god i hope Politics gets put back in, it was one of the most disappointing things about Oblivion, here you were at the center of political power for the whole Empire with the emperor gone and no heirs to take his place and... nothing...

Like I said, Todd apparently wanted the better stuff, and it may have even been written and everything, but for time and other reasons it had to be cut. I think it's in the fan interview in the Shivering Isles area.

It probably had something to do with the the odd combination of them learning the 360's specs really really late and issues with level scaling and Radiant AI. There's a lot of stuff I see that wasn't in Oblivion that I realize now was most likely a result of those constraints.

Hopefully Skyrim will be in much better luck. Politics and religion need to return full force, because, honestly, that was perhaps my largest issue with Oblivion. It ruined the feeling of it being another world. What is a world without politics or religion? A sham. That's what.

exactly! it was tough to get immersed in the game that seemed really shallow, like jumping in what appears to be a bottomless lake but when you open your eyes you realize your just in ankle deep water. your just kind of wading not really immersed...

religion and politics and the many facets that they add to a game world make things so much better

Likely true. After all, it was a new system with new programs. Realize that, as in any artistic endeavor, probably less than ten percent of ideas make it into the finished product. Since TES also has in-game books, it likely has as far as plot goes the best ratio of story-to-idea implementation ever, but as far as the tech goes, it's got no leg up on everyone else's problems.

I'm assuming that the elder council and some politics will be involved in Skyrim.

Nothing much to add, just one more thumbs up for political machinations, backstabbing, resources wars, religious, racial, and cultural tensions and so on.

Indeed, some nice "Cloak and Dagger" political things would be cool, but they can't overdo it, otherwise it will loose the attractivness of the concept.

For some some reason, I can't help but imagine a Nordic assassination involving a totally drunk assassin in nothing but fur boots chasing the target around their house with an axe.

I think that faction politics on the level of Morrowind would be fine. It was interesting but not intrusive, and you could just go about your business without getting wrapped up in too much politics or religion. However, politics can be over-done, such as in Dragon Age, where every other encounter is related to someone's army, dynasty, or political aspirations. Ideally, political involvement should be an optional part of the storyline, not the main driving force, especially in a fantasy RPG.

Well of course. Everything in moderation. It's all part of a very intricate and complicated balancing act that Bethesda needs to perfect. I do completely support a return to politics playing a huge role, as it adds another dynamic later of exciting and unforgettable immersion. So much work to be done, but if anyone can pull it off (not like they haven't done it before), it's Bethesda!
