Unofficial "Will my pc run skyrim" Thread #5

Mother board : Gigabyte Micro ATX intel
CPU : Intel i5 2500k 3.3 (3.7) x4
GPU : Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256 bit
RAM : 8 GB DDR3 1600
SSD : OCZ Vertex 2 120 GB Sata II

I'm also between getting the upgraded versions of the CPU, The CPU would be the intel i7 2600k with 3.4 (3.8) x4, an extra 100 bucks, I don't really see the need for it though

For gaming you don't need the 2600k. Unless it's coded for hyperthreading. The 2500k is a beast of a CPU. You can always buy a nice cpu cooler and overclock if you want the performance of a 2600k.

ahh, well im not that well versed in computers (i know the basics of what will and will not stand any chance of running this, and im going on the assumption that skyrim will attempt to destroy any system its put into)

Im in the UK (England to be precise) and the budget (without monitor, keyboard, mouse or anything to be honost) is £1000 but i can stretch that to maybe £1200. that system is £1099 without the monitor buy keyboard and mouse are included

as i said, it doesnt need to be mind blowingly powerfull, so long as itll run skyrim smoothly as possible maxed out and it wont need a complete overhall 5 minutes after i buy it.

Looking up on overclocking im doubtfull, unless it would make a console generation style diffrence, i dont think id tamper with my desktop, especialy not running the risk of overheating (although note that the room its in is usaly quite chilly)

Thanks for the help, i was looking for just this, so i can accuratly determine the best possible option :)

[EDIT] I PM'd you on advice as to where to trim for cost while trying to maintain the best performance.

I went and spent the whole £1200 [...+ £1 actually including VAT]

http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/computers/intel-sandy-bridge-pc/

What does £1201 get you?

...why the most game-stomping rig I could devise. Note that I went with a single Blu-Ray burner, you could switch that out to a DVD burner and BR player if you wish and save a couple of pounds. I just figured the BR burner would fit into the longevity better and with USB3 an external DVD is also an option. Also note that I went with the 2500k and an aftermarket cooler, I think it is better to OC it at some point down the road than stuck with a stock i7 2600....

...lastly, you'll notice two video cards. This is where all the real "game-stomping" happens and each card has 2GB VRAM [dual card setups share the VRAM, you don't get 4GB of VRAM, you have 2GB... but this is better than two 1GB cards]. With 2GB of VRAM, you'll be ready for all those high-res texture mods.

We can't know for certain if any machine would be able to run max, but what I can say is that your PC should have a fair chance of doing so.

Hmm in fact, this is the rig specs that I am PLannning to buy as it is within my budget . So you reckon I should go ahead with this purchase? And will this pc be able to run other games at high graphics , lets say like CRYsIs

If it is just a plan, keep it that way until mid-late October.

Gives you more time to get as much cash as possible and also gives as much time as possible for prices to go down.

Also, why that PSU, unless you already have it and are transferring it, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817104096.

My current PC will run ANYTHING on Maximum.. but it wasn't cheap at all.. want my Specs? :disguise:

[Snip]

Price: $6400

and as you can see.. There is plenty of room for expansion.. But I won't have to upgrade for about 2 yrs

I think this may be a little overkill almost 6x as much as my cyberpower rig which also runs anything on maximum.

Knowing the exact CPU would help. If it is the Q9550 [2.83GHz], then I'd just focus on getting the best GPU your PSU can handle.

Don't go AMD for gaming, http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/203?vs=289.

Don't go AMD for gaming, scroll down to the game benchmarks and look at the multithreaded Dragon Age: Origins benchmark.

The top end phenom II x4 (980 I think) is more than enough for gaming. No point getting more unless you either a: can't be assed upgrading in 2 years, which you might not even have to, and b: have money to set on fire and want the best that money can buy.

Both  . But unless you wanna play something very graphics-demanding (like BF3), you've more than enough with your current rig (by now).

It's not that the PII x4 980 is bad, but that it isn't worth a new CPU and mobo for http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/362?vs=50. There are gains, but for ~$180 for the CPU plus the mobo [and getting anything less than an AM3+ board is buying yourself a dead end for upgrades] makes it a bad way to spend money. A Q9550 is fully capable of running Skyrim well, so I'd put the bank on the best GPU if the need arose to put it anywhere.

Has anyone upgraded from an NVIDIA GT to a GTX? If so, what differences did you notice? I'm going to have someone build a custom PC for me, but he isn't a gamer and thinks the GTX will be too much. Specifically, I'm looking at the "budget gaming desktop computer" on this link: http://www.build-gaming-computers.com/gaming-desktop-computer.html

My top priorities for a gaming pc are:

1) Bang for the buck,
2) A motherboard and processor that will suffice for a many years,
3) Ability (and space) to upgrade.

Any feedback from an experienced, knowledgeable PC gamer would be greatly appreciated.

The current model GT cards are designed for office PCs, not for gaming. If you have one of them, you stand to gain quite a bit from switching over to the GTX line, as GTX is nVidia's high-end branch of cards (whereas GTS is the mainline average branch).

The best "bang for buck" deals you can get nowadays are for the GTX 460 and GTX 560 Ti. Stay away from the regular 560 for now, it's just a rebranded GTX 460 with 50 dollars extra attached to the price tag.
