"Steel Sword" - not Steel short sword or steel longs

Post » Thu Jul 28, 2011 10:58 am

Hard not to find Short Swords in Oblivion utterly useless, though if they did more damage in sneak or if Long Swords gave you a minor block penalty that system would've been better.

I don't see the point of shortswords. I never found an archtype that would use them instead of daggers/longswords.

Legionnaires or anyone built around blocking, short swords (especially the Gladius) are a very defensive weapon, where as longswords are generally more offensive.

Most likely "long swords" will simply be called "claymores".

We already know there will be both one-handed and two-handed weapon skills, and obviously they're not going to neglect blades in the two-handed category.

http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Imperial_Sword Looks like a gladius

Does that not look like a short sword to people?

EDIT: And at above, we've already seen one handed long swords.

Here's a thought, try not to think of them as seperate things. Technically speaking, they are all 1 handed blade weapons. Purely based on their design you will have a physical balancing scale to determine not only damage, but swinging speed and range. From daggers to longswords, there is a distinct difference, but by only having 2, there will be a choice between two extremes.

So comes the middle ground and a balance between length, strength, and speed: The "short" sword. (A.k.a. the longdagger)

It's a perfectly logical option and if you can't see the implications then don't use it. To say good riddance is a bit of ignorant arrogance, and while I understand you don't use it, having it as an option adds a level of customization that I enjoyed. Does that make sense or will we all just continue barking at each other?

They were kinda useless in Oblivion.

In Morrowind, they were faster than longswords but less powerful. But for stabbing, they were great. And considering they were a good option for people who used short blade. Without the distinction between short and long bladed weapons, short swords were kind of left aside.

I never used short swords but it's sort of sad to see Bethesda taking away more things to make unique warriors. I'd like to see glass weapons light and sharp but degrade faster, like Morrowind, but they'll probably be high-level weapons that are heavy and strong. I'd like to see advantages to using short swords in the off hand when dual wielding, but they're just taken out in general.

Not a big deal, but still sort of sad.

Weapons are for weaklings
Real men deal with their problems using fists only
(one thing everyone should learn from Chuck Norris)
Bethesda should remove weapons at all

But to be honest
THIS
VVV
Personally, I would like everybody who thinks that something should be removed from the game merely because they never used it to be prohibited from even playing the game, much less commenting on it.

I'm not even kidding.

Removing anything from open world RPG is bad.
TES games should have more content with each next game.

I am of the opinion that the "swords" seen in the trailer are shortswords, and are now the standard, while longswords will still be "longswords."

Maybe they just omitted the word "long" and everything is the same, shortswords are called shortswords and long swords are just called swords.

I don't think anyone is saying that they want it removed. I think everyone that says that don't use shortswords would be ok with them removed because they will not be missed.

Everyone that says they don't use shortswords would be ok with them being removed.

I would be ok with longswords being removed. I never use them. Maybe instead of removing short swords, they are just removing longswords and renaming short swords?

Hell, I have never used axes, warhammers, maces or claymores, Altmer, Khajiit, Imperials, Redguards, Argonians. I wouldn't mind if all those were removed. They are pretty superfluous anyway, and we haven't seen some of them in Skyrim yet.

I never saw a point in shortswords and longswords in the same game.

Shortswords are stabbing weapons normally... like oversized daggers.

In irl they are amazing when combined with a shield.
SEE THE ROMAN EMPIRE.

Long swords were more for mounted units so they could swing down and hit; then it was associated with knights and then become a gentlemanly thing to use.

In a 1v1 fight a short+ shield is going to [censored] a long+shield simply do to how IRL fights play out.
