Cannot edit Morrowind.ini

Post » Fri Jul 29, 2011 11:48 am

This is the error I get while trying to save it.

Cannot create the C:\Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind\Morrowind.ini\ file.

Make sure that the path and file name are correct.

Tried taking the .ini file out of the directory into the desktop, still didn't work while trying to save it. I was able to edit before I reinstalled Morrowind with any problems at all. I use a notepad to open it and edit it btw.

EDIT: Also, saving it as a different name, it says I do not have permission, please contact the admin. How do I give it permission?

Get rid of the last slash.

All file paths end with no slash at the end. For instance, C:\Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind\Morriwind.ini

If there is a slash, that means (to the computer at least) whatever is nexr is a folder or the file itself.

C:\Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind\Morriwind.ini\ . See that slash at the end? You're trying to create a path nonexistant folder or file, or so the computer thinks. Try removing that last slash and save again.

While we're talking about ini - I edited it to let me have screenshots, but...

It didn't work. I changed screenshots=0 to screenshots=1 or whatever, but the error message still comes up when I'm in-game.

Help?

Er, how do I change that? Oh, btw, there is no slash at the end of the error. I typed in that slash without knowing.

Okay, I fixed it, here's what I did. I copied Morrowind.ini to the desktop. Renamed it, changed it, then I was able to save it. Then rename it back to Morrowind.ini, and move it back to the Morrowind directory and replace the original Morrowind.ini file. Now I'm able to save without any trouble.

That error can still occur, but the screenshot will still actually be saved. Check your Morrowind folder and you might find those screenshots you took.
This is why most people use the MGE screenshot function instead. It is much more reliable.

Assuming you have changed your install location, you also need to have Admin control over Morrowind in order to alter the ini.
