I really like "Separated at Birth" and the following quests. I though it was cool how the story of the Jemane brothers continued.

On topic: Yeah I think "Whodunit?" was a pretty great quest, "The spirits have lease" however, I would always rush through and complete in a few minutes... "The Forlorn Watchman" was one of my favorites too. I think that with the new engine and AI they should easily top some of our most memorable Oblivion quests though. :celebration:

I really hope so, but I think both of those quests set a high bar, along with my second favorite quest - PARANOIA

I had never imagined a character in a videogame could actually infect me with its sense of paranoia, but Glarthir was a very well-written character, with awesome dialogue. Sure enough, he had me believing his lies and I spent hours just freaking watching those Surilie brothers dig in the mud on their vineyard. I was totally convinced they were up to something suspicious!

I found out there's a consequence to refusing to help him. He ends up killing an innocent girl, and then the guards kill him.

But yes, I would love to see quests like that. In particular Whodunit. I created a save inside the manor just so I could reload and play through it every way I could find. I seriously hope they've put something like this into Skyrim, as it made a nice change from some of the "Go here, kill X, come back" format of some of the quests.

But "Whodunit" was basically "Go there, kill them all, come back". It took some five minutes to talk to all NPCs and see the premise and guess (correctly) how it would all play out - the hand-holding in the quest journal didn't help at all. The NPCs were one-dimensional and somewhere between boring and annoying. What's worse, it all happened in a separate universe even though it had no reason for being so. You couldn't enter the house before or after the quest; you couldn't leave during the quest, nor could the NPCs. Nobody inside had any ties to the outside world, nor had the events in the outside world any consequences on the events inside. This kind of "closed adventure" garbage has no business being in an open-world game, at all.

Since they both svcked, yes.

Do you believe you have the time and the strength to elaborate on your response? Because I am fascinated to know why you believe they svcked.

Nevermind, I read your other response. Although I'm wondering what you classify as a "good" quest.

although it was just a simple fetch quest, one of the recommendations for the mages guild (i cannot remember which one) involved the leader of that guild hall telling you to fetch a particular ring called the ring of burden from a well - simple stuff.
Spoiler
that is, until i talked to the other members and realized that a few other associates had died attempting to retrieve the ring, so they gave me a spell called "buoyancy", a water breathing and feather spell. when i went to retrieve the ring, there was a body sunk on the bottom of the well with the ring, and i realized it weighed 200 pounds! thank god for the feather spell :). once i gave the ring to the guild i decided to investigate the room of the dunmer who had given me the quest, who did not like me very much... and found books about the mythic dawn, necromancy under his pillow. the way it was written was so unique, i hope to find more quests like it.

I want to see quests that have results that are sad, or otherwise difficult to deal with. Things where, no matter what you do, someone is hurt. Side quests traditionally are a mundane or otherwise unremarkable affair, but I want to see that changed up.

One of the recent games I have played, called Nier, had truly wrenching writing. Here is an http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucXF8DZJ8cI&feature=player_detailpage#t=374s...from a sidequest in that game that began as unremarkable, though beware spoilers if you ever intend to play it.

Is that made by square enix? Seems very final fantasy like... Interesting fact square enix called the game final fantasy because they beleaved it would be their last game; as well as Bethsada thought Morrowind would be their last, both ended up sparking huge followings. Anyways the game just seemed to have a final fantasy feel to it was wondering if it was by the same people, haven't played ff since FFX

There were plenty of great quests in Oblivion. A few of the Daedric ones were excellent... the one were you crash a dinner party and Sheogorath's raining, flaming dogs were excellent moments. I generally liked all of the DB quests because they had multiple ways to complete the objective.

As long as they avoid falling into the "go here, kill stuff" and the "go here, kill stuff, pick up stuff" general questline, I'm sure we'll get plenty of unique quests.

My personal favorite was "A Shadow over Hackdirt". My character wasn't very strong at this point and there was a constant sense of fear during the whole quest. Very well done.

How about quests on par with, say, 'An unexpected Voyage', 'The Collector' trilogy or 'Through a nightmare, darkly', since they were the main standouts of Oblivion IMHO?

IMO, these were probably the two best quests in Oblivion. Do you all think any Skyrim quests will be able to equal or top these?

  • Whodunit?
  • Where Spirits Have Lease

oh, i LOVED those quests!

whodunit, i cant remember how many times i reloaded this seperate save i had and played that quest over and over!

i couldn't get tired of that quest, it was one of the more fun quests...

where spirits have lease, that was a pretty cool quest, too... not to mention it lead to one of the coolest houses in the game, at a pretty damn cheap price!

i hope we get quests equal or greater to those in skyrim... whoever wrote those quests was freaking awesome.

Whodunit? was a great quest. At first I had troubles with "Where Spirits Have Lease" (finacially), but when I began the quest it was kind of cool.
My favorite quests are actually "The Ultimate Heist" and "Museum of Oddities" in the Shivering Isles.
I would love more quests such as the Jermaine-questline, where you follow NPC's through a series of quests.
Also some of my favorite quests.

I agree, Nier does look awesome. :D (Don't understand how anyone could complain about those graphics. The style is beautiful and the town looks huge.)

Umm, I seriously don't get why "Whodunit?" was such a great quest, especially for "when the game came out". Where do these claims come from? It's just a quest where you slaughter a bunch of people and they suspect one another - a classic whodunit viewed from the murderer's side. Yes that is refreshing and it is fun, but it certainly isn't very deep. Nor does it say anything about that quest's quality. In my opinion, they had this idea and implemented it in the most direct and simple way. It could have easily been better in many regards. For example, they could have set the quest in a castle. The NPCs could have had more health. They could have given the player the option to stage the killings like accidents.
I would have liked this quest more if it had been on a larger scale, mostly. Once you were in the house, it was possible to finish the quest in less than 5 minutes. It was a lacking implementation of a cool idea.

Huh, of course Skyrim will have quests better than these. Skyrim will have better quests overall.

Hopefully they will all be better? Whodunnit was just a hacknslash (well, for me a shoot-n-scoot). Just be patient and kill kill kill

Were Spirits have lease...meh.

What I would like are quests designed around subtlty. For example, did you notice how the scrolls and language changed during the DB dead drops? Unfortunatly, they lead us through that part of the story instead of making us think, plan, and execute the bad blood by ourselves. Most quests are just too obvious

It was made by Square Enix, but was handled by a completely different team. If you've heard of Drakengard, it was done by them.

pale pass, ultimate heist, killing the dunmer prisoner for DB, Taxonomy of Obsession... these stick in my mind.

but roleplaying beats any scripted quest imo.

Through a nightmare darkly and Canvas the Castle were two of my favorites.

Whodunit was probably my favorite DB quest, the Anvil house one? Was okay I guess.

Hopefully they will have some very good quests scattered in with the usual cookie-cutter quests.

The problem is they just aren't that interesting, or otherwise convincing as far as character driven quests go.

I wasn't a huge fan of either of those. I personally liked "Scheduled for Execution" the most. I liked sneaking past the guards, especially in the room with all of the pillars, I like having to scoot around the poll. In case your like my brother and bring up "The Ultimate Heist" it is too easy with all of those cabinets next to the walk way.

Kinda sad when something so simple is among my favorite... other then that one i would probably say "Turning a blind Eye" where i like to try and sneak past all of the monks.

That voice acting. :cryvaultboy:

it would be awesome if the side quests had more depth but they already said there would be more side quests than fallout but smaller quests so plenty of I need X amount wolf pelts etc...

Agreed. I'm really hoping that there are some quests in Skyrim where, after 10 quests under your belt, you are still struggling up a learning curve.
