Unofficial "Will my PC run Skyrim" thread #6

If you can spend $800 dollars on a computer from Dell, like an XPS or bare minimum Alienware for $800 (which isn't much more than a console), You'll be able to play this game on max graphics. It utilizes DX 9. Very outdated graphics system, and modern video cards will run it like gravy.

Quick question: Do you think a gigabyte GTX 460 768MB DDR5 will be able to run it?

I'm from Argentina, and everything is more expensive here, specially video cards, I'm putting together a new pc for Skyrim, the idea is to have an Amd Phenom x6, so I know the micro will be enough, but, what about the GPU?

I've seen several reviews and this card is the best "cheap" card available, but is it enough?

So yes, it will run Skyrim, and is so overpowered to the point its actually an egotistical system and Skyrim will be offended by it..... mission accomplished then :)

But seriously a straight answer would be nice, just saying if it will Skyrim in HD on ultra with no lag or other issues without overclocking.

I can promise you will run it on max settings. Currently the top cards in the market are the gtx590 and the HD 6970s. The reason I said nope is because at first glance I thought you were just posting to brag, but then saw you were genuinely curious. The graphics in this game are by no means spectacular (albeit they are better than most games). You will easily run this on max settings with room for visual upgrades in the future. You're probably safe to run most games on max settings for another two years I'd say.

A huge thank you to both of you for going out of your way replying to my post.

One last question - what are the settings for Oblivion on the console versions - low or medium? I've got the game for the 360, which i've played to death, but would like to try some of the mods. However, no point switching over to the PC version if it's going to be a lesser experience.

Never having seen Oblivion on anything other than PCs, I can only go on published opinions from others, most of whom compared the Medium PC quality with Xbox360 quality, so the two would look about the same, while having added the option to include mods that do not change the demand on the graphics subsystems. Any mod you are interested in should include information about whether it affects your card's ability to render the modded images.

Yeah, you'll run it. The GTX460 is better than my 9800gtx which can run most games on pretty high settings. Do note, however, that I use 1440x900 monitors. The GTX460 is also better than the GTX550 TI, so don't be confused by that just because the GTX5xx series is newer. :3

Erm... for people that aren't very good with pc parts could someone explain me where i can find out what kind of hardware is in my computer? I'd also like to know if my computer would be up to running skyrim with some ridiculously heavy graphics mods on it.

The main things you need are

Processor speed. <- Can be found out by right clicking on "My Computer" or "Computer" on the start bar, right clicking and then clicking properties. You should be able to see the speed and number of cores in your computer.
RAM. <- Same place as above.
GPU. <- Control Panel and then device manager. Display adapters will reveal your current graphics card.

I highly recommend ignoring this post;

Yes I'm genuinely curious, I've worked with computers before, but never something with so much power, the only thing left to beside is if its worth switching the x10 blu ray for an x4, as if i do I can afford the pro version of the motherboard and a different hard disk with x4 CACHE.

Disc drives are always much easier to replace. Motherboards are a little more difficult.

so ill swap out the x10 for the x4, increase the cache, upgrade the mother board and maybe even switch the memory RAM to a 1600MHz Kingston instead of the Samsung.

If you can play Fallout 3 and or New Vegas on Maximum settings you're PC will play Skyrim with stellar performance; pure and simple.

The main thing I get hit with in Fallout 3 is the lack of 64 bit exe. It would run infinitely better if it supported 64 bit systems.

I'm considering upgrading my 9800gtx to a 6870 so I can play this on max. Cheap and allows for me to get another 6870 in the future for crossfire. :D

FO3 ran on x64 systems fine, it just didnt have the capability to take advantage of more RAM.

...and that's lack of 64-bit support :) All 32-bit apps works fine in x64 systems, as far as I know.

Thanks again.

I wouldn't mind if it looked like the console version, so I'll give it a bash. The GoTY version costs next to nothing so no big deal if it does struggle on medium.
