Now, I know it's a matter of perspective, but I just read the topic http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1214843-do-you-think-any-quests-in-skyrim-will-be-able-to-equal-or-top-these-two-oblivion-quests/ and I realized no one has mentioned the main quest as a good quest line.
I think Bethesda DID try to give us a good main quest. It had a very nice theme in general. I could describe it as: After the murder of the emperor, leaving the continent of Cyrodiil with no ruler, the Daedra start to invade into this world by opening the gates of Oblivion. Due to the fact that the only threat to them, the emperor, is now gone, or so they think? You must now go on a quest to find the emperor's lost son, who's rumored to be a monk in the ruined city of Kvatch.
I think it sounds fairly good when you describe it like this, and don't misunderstand! The main quest was NOT a BAD main quest! It just didn't use its full potential. The main quest could've been so much better and well written, but there were several problems with the main quest:
- It wasn't long enough.
- It didn't give us that feeling of rushing into it.
- It was mostly repetitive, and eventually annoying (closing all those Oblivion gates).
- There was no gray area, all choices were either good or bad.
- There weren't enough choices...
- It wasn't interesting enough, it could've been written better, in my opinion.
- The villain was plain BAD, he didn't REALLY have a personality, and you didn't have any interaction with him. It would've been nice if you could get to know him better, as to know about his intentions of why the hell would he want to destroy the world, put into MORE depth (like in Morrowind... sorry people).
In short, unlike the rest of this thread... If Bethesda would've provided us with a quest that touches all of those feedbacks, then I think we can expect a VERY interesting main quest this time around. Hopefully they have learned.
