A Wasteland-ish Game

This is more of a discussion topic for the idea, and probably will be for a while until some solid content is made, but me and a friend are working on a re-imagining of sorts of Wasteland, in terms of the general post-apocalypse setting and considering the way the gameplay features of the original DOS game varied from it's child series, Fallout. This is not a overblown attempt to create a full game. Our intended end result would be a tech demo showcasing that the quality of games of yesteryear can be applied and improved on today, with the intention of using the end product in a portfolio. That said, who has played the original Wasteland, and what are your thoughts and opinions on what made it unique at the time, and maybe what makes it unique in comparison to Fallout? How do you think someone would go about translating all of these gameplay features to a modern game or improve on them?
