UI (User Interface) in Skyrim really so bad?

Post » Mon Aug 01, 2011 12:08 pm

I already mentioned it in another thread, but I think this issue deserves an own thread.
Just look at this picture:
http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/3883/53210856.jpg

What I really dislike about the new UI is, that you see absolutely no values of the items untill you selected them. So you have no possibility to easily compare them, no possibility to sort them, and everything is totally unclear. :sadvaultboy:
What do you think? Will it really that bad and confusing, or will the UI in the final version look different?
Do you feel the same, or are you fine with getting absolutely no information out of the interface?

Oh, and what do you think of the 3D-map?

One of the devs said the E3 menu wasn't even close to it's final build in an interview.

I like the UI, but I'm still a little nervous about PC version. A highly functional and efficient UI is more important to me than pretty UI. I just hope Bethesda is able to find that balance between functional, customizable, efficient UI and the new pretty UI design.

This is exactly the part that they've said is still under development...

They've said there are going to be a better way to compare two items instantly.
Personally I would think something akin to Borderlands...

@aWalt1313 and Bukee
Ah, thank you very much! :)
I hope that's true, because at the moment it's just not displaying a lot of information.

I just hope it's optimized and not bloated like a bad flash website. It looks like a very expensive UI design, they're probably using Scaleform. Let's hope it's fast and doesn't get in the way.

UI is generally one of those things we can change with mods fairly quickly. I won't know if the vanilla version is ok or not until I actually play it. My guess is that whatever the final release version might be, that it could be improved upon for the PC version.

The UI is great for someone playing on a TV. For someone playing on a monitor it could be greatly improved.

For a controller it looks that it would be fine.. but the overall size seems a bit too big for k/m

Changed my vote from "Bad" to "Terrible" upon seeing that pic. Thankfully, it is confirmed to NOT be the final version.

That could make it easier to see the stats of your weapons and compare them to the ones on the ground or in the enemies inventory before you pick it up.Don't know how it would be implemented though?.

Its okay.
Most likely, I am sure there will be tweaks before release, but I wouldn't expect them to do an overhaul of the current system.
Meh -_-. I would prefer a paper map.

The UI is designed around someone sitting at a distance from a low resolution display (a TV). They could have used smaller fonts and have more of the list visible at once. There is also a general lack of information, too many menus within menus.

A good UI for a monitor =/= a good UI for a TV.

Bethesda never said the PC version was going to have a different UI, just optimized for the PC screen. Like smaller text, more info displayed, etc.

I don't understand why the compass is top-center when it could be bottom center, and about ? as big.

Well console users are fine, pc users are fine as well, since I haven't seen one pc user yet say he/she doesn't like mods. Actually thats most likely what Beth made the interface based on, for console users, it makes sense really.

That's something else I don't understand. The games (so far), have been able to detect the platform via script, so why do they not have it call up a UI that's is optimized for the platform its running on?

Inventory is amazing. I LOVE that we can get a close look at items now.

3D map is meh - seems fancy for the sake of being fancy and too good at what it does.

HUD is awfully intrusive. I especially hate the arcadey text messages.

“We’re packing a lot of info on the screen and the whole interface is much less ‘look at giant fonts!’ than, say, Oblivion,”
