Little Disturbing Lack of Realism in Video

Post » Mon Aug 01, 2011 5:36 am

True, that could easily happen but also need to assume that these guys are guards of some sort or just warriors of some kind trained how to fight and react in a situation like that. They where not just weekend hikers camping out roasting marshmallows on an open fire. :P
One game I can think of that had this sort of AI was Far Cry 2.

I've never thought of bandits as guards or warriors, just people who happened to pick up a weapon and know how to swing it. Even a trained warrior could be totally thrown off by their friend suddenly dying in the middle of conversation right before their eyes.

but if one NPC is acting like that all NPC will act like that...
so i hope they will fix the AI

Maybe, but not necessarily. Certainly not every NPC acted the same in Oblivion, they had courage statistics which determined whether or not they would run away in a fight. I don't think it would be hard to implement different behaviors in those types of situations using that same type of system. One person might stand there in disbelief, while another might run away, while yet another will react quickly and seek combat.

THE TIME SLOWING PERK

like in mass effect for the sniper class

There are two confirmed Archery perks so far, a Zoom Perk and a Bullet Time Perk.

This was the Zoom Perk, not the Bullet Time perk.

The reason for the delay is because of the player's high sneak skill, as Todd explained each transition from one state to another is now affected by the player's Sneak skill, unlike FO3.

I think this was something they plan to fix as I remember reading somewhere that the guy said "I think I heard something!" as his buddy was dropping dead. Probably just a minor AI glitch

You are throwing around magical magicness meanwhile dragons roam the sky's and you are worrying about realism.

You've known your friend for 20 years, doing the same treasure hunting routine over and over. Just another day's work. You just had lunch and a nice conversation about the local village cuisine. Not expecting anything to happen today, your friend suddenly gets killed with an arrow. You are in a state of shock of what just happened. It's not going to be "awe you punk, I'm going to get you!"

If I could ban one word from these forums, it would be realism. This is a fantasy, video game. If I wanted realism, I wouldn't be playing a fantasy game. Hell, I wouldn't be playing video games; I'd stand up and go do stuff. At the least, maybe I'd play a reality simulator, not a fantasy game. Fantasy =/= realism. Fun in a video game =/= fun in a video game. Realism in a fantasy = person who is confused about what they are doing.

Umm, ok so you dont want realism in your fantasy videos/games? OK, lets say we remove one aspect of realism in Skyrim for instance. Ahh, ok lets say that trees grow upside down in our fantasy would of Skyrim. Dont you think that unrealistic look to the trees would be totally stupid looking? We need realism within our fantasy world to help make it believable and to immerse us into the story and feel of the game. To give it depth and meaning! To not have realism within our fantasy world would look stupid! You swing a sword at an enemy and cut him but instead of hurting him you tickle him and he starts laughing at you. That would be unrealistic and completely stupid!!! Guess how many people would buy a game like that? VERY, VERY little if any!

Not to mention you dont know which way to go in order to get the guy that did it and it may take a minute for the arrows angle and how youre freind was standing to decide which way you think it came from.I dont see it as major perfect naw the al isnt gonna be but i doubt it will be bad.

Of course one could argue that in a fantasy setting, anything is possible.

That's sort of the point.

I mean if its in a room where he hide's behind an object next to the main entrance. And i'm pretty sure you cant hide in a "potion" lol

Then you put on your sword and run to hack his head off.(no dismemberment in this game i know but you know what i mean)

.

Bottom line is I would like to see smart AI not stupid mindless idiots. Not saying they aint smart but a little smarter then what I seen would be awesome.

You'll probably see an improved AI mod on the PC; seeing as consoles are limited and can only do so much, nowadays it's a game of give and take.

also realistic human responses to situations

Witcher 2

The thing with the guard is a lack of animations in my honest opinion. That's not do to lack of realism but game development. The guy should roll, or sprint... anything besides basic "shoot bad guy" animation.

Sure, in a fantasy world you can have anything you want but there must be some sort of realism or its just plain chaos and stupid looking. Or at least it must have some sort of validity within that world.

Actually, if you take a closer look, you can see that you after you shoot the first guy, the second enters in combat mode... He picked his sword...
But he doesn't know where you are...

Maybe it would be better with voices acting there...
Like: HELP!!!
And other people from the dungeon go there...

Or he could start searching the area there... Saying: Come out and fight me, you coward... / I know you're there, come out now! / I'll kill you...

If thats the case then Todd neglected to mention that in any of the videos I have seen.

That's because he's talking about something else completely. I got that from another poster the first time this was brought up.
To be honest, I'm more disappointed with generic "bandit" enemies again! You'd think the bandits would get more friendly towards you if you slaughtered every guard in the game. But no. . Biggest failure of TES in my books, making the factions initially hostile to he NPC transparent.

Reposting my transcription from a previous thread:

Female Bandit: We're just supposed to sit here while Arvel runs off with that Golden Claw?

Male Bandit: If that Dark Elf wants to go on ahead, let him. It's better than us risking our necks.

Female Bandit: What if Arvel doesn't come back?

[Female Bandit one-shotted by PC arrow. Male Bandit enters combat stance.]

Todd has mentioned that Skyrim uses the same Alert, Detected, etc., A.I. states as FO3, however, they added a delay to the transition from one state to another, and this delay is affected by your Sneak score.

Perhaps the character in Todd mode had too high sneak skill level, so the transition was too slow, and the time has slowed as well...

The end result can be what we see in the demo.
