Keeps checking hardware

Post » Tue Aug 02, 2011 1:35 am

Everytime time I try to play NV, a window pops up that says its checking my hardware. Then it says the game has been set to medium quality. Everytime I click the play button, it acts like it will start up, but just goes back to the startup window and the window pops up again that says it's checking my hardware. My hardware is completely able to run the game. I've had it for a year now and it just did this a day ago.

Sounds like something is corrupted, try verifying your cache. If that doesn't do it Make sure your system ram and video card are properly seated in their slots. And Before Gorath says it post your DXdiag!

That would be either Starforce or Tig 'ol Bitties. The whole thing is major overkill for me . . I stop reading them after the first block of audio processor entries, so I just tell the new arrivals that I need "more information" . . the thing I've had to do multiple times in the sticky near the top discussing that report is remind them not to put copies of DxDiag reports into the Sticky itself, they just don't belong there.

I've verified the cache twice now, and it still won't work.

If I just delete the local content, and reinstall it would that work? Would that get rid of my saves?

Since you don't want to provide the missing information that the folks here could use to help you, any answer has to be nothing but a WAG, and I don't bother trying to make those based on zero useful information.

Go to (My) Documents/My Games/Fallout NV then right click FalloutPrefs.ini>Properties and make sure it is not read only.

Go to (My) Documents/My Games/Fallout NV then right click FalloutPrefs.ini>Properties and make sure it is not read only.

I tried to but it said it was unreadable or corrupted.

Yep, delete everything in your saves folder (you can try moving your old saves somewhere else and putting them back in later but that won't work if they're all corrupted). Delete the game and let Steam reinstall it to a different directory than C:\Program Files(x86). Preferably to a different drive if available. Then don't ever use auto save or quick save again, only manual saves or use something like CASM. Painful but it's the best way to correct corruption.

The least usable Geforce graphics card is the best of the two GT 240s, if you can still find one. What you are trying to use is really slow, weak, and mostly useless by comparison.

The official minimum Geforce card is not available new any longer, and the 310 is the same as the 210, a really inexpensive and minimized device, less capable than the last of nVIDIA's Chipset video chips when they were still selling chipsets. Here is the 210 versus the official minimum.

It is entirely possible that the game cannot play at all on a 310, but TTBOMK, it should try to do so, and just be so slow that it is very lacking in enjoyability.

The fact is that human sensoriums vary greatly; there are some people with very low standards who accept almost any kind of terrible results because they just don't care to experience the game the way it was designed. Another less well known fact is that low quality hardware goes bad far more quickly that well made hardware. The Geforce 210 / 310 are similar to onboard chipset video chips with regard to being designed for business, not for games.

Neither one has adequate cooling or protection from the results of overheat. They were not designed for games, and will often begin to fail far sooner than similar devices being used as they were designed, instead of overstressed in gameplay. Personally, I am certain I would never come anywhere close to wanting to play any game on such a bad video device, especially when something actually designed for the use is so very inexpensive.

I'm betting that your 310 is already half-dead right now.
