Whodunit

Everyone always goes on about how great this quest was, and I didn't even remember what it was. When I looked it up, I was like "Oh yeah... I just killed a bunch of people in a house... did I do it wrong?"

So I went back and tried the quest a few times. But there's nothing interesting about it. Kill someone. Listen to what other people thought of them. Kill another person. Here their opinion and what they think of other people. Kill another person etc. until there's one left, and they turn on you or think there's someone else in the house. If your disposition is high enough, the last of the 2 remaining people might think the other is the murderer and kill them for you, and I managed to get a girl to go into the cellar, but that was the best I worked out. I thought maybe you could twist their thoughts through dialogue or something but the choices are mostly limited to asking what they think about other characters.

So what's the huge appeal?

EDIT: Oh, and all of them ended up with Dwarven arrows through their heads and I'm the only one walking around with some kind of weapon (a dwarven bow and arrows no less) and nobody seems to notice.

I've never done this quest, but I'm seeing it's a DB one, and I just started DB a few weeks ago. I'm not sure what-all this is supposed to be about ,but I took a quick glance at it on UESP, and it sounds kinda neat.

I'm liking the creativeness of having to kill certain NPCs while not killing others. I'ts not always just go in and hack & slash, there is some finesse involved. I messed up one of the early DB quests; killed someone I wasn't supposed to , and didn't get the extra bonus for finishing up the quest properly, which I thought was kinda cool.

I"m not sure how Whodunnit is supposed to shape up, and I dont' want any spoilers, so I can't see what's going on yet. Sounds kinda cool, though.

Uh, well the following is SORT OF a spoiler, so maybe you shouldn't read it.

It doesn't seem to really matter what order you kill them in. As far as I can tell, the only thing that really makes anything happen is your disposition which determines whether they'll turn on you or someone else. There's not much to play with.

You have a house. And a bunch of people to kill. There are literally dozens of ways you could pull this off, and have complete freedom to do so. How uncreative do you have to be to not see the appeal in that?

On paper this quest is quite nice, but in my opinion it lacks some creative opportunities to kill those people. I mean sure, you can use frenzy or poisoned apples, but then again you can use them on everyone else in the game, too. Also, after Ocheeva's contracts I find the DB to be mostly boring. Did anyone else feel like this or is it just me?

You nailed it. I think it is one of the worst and most boring quests in the game. It just a matter of killing a bunch of very weak people.

There was so much missed potential too. For example, suppose if using speechcraft and dialog options you could convince one person to kill another (aside from when your at the last two) either out of greed or fear, then it would have been worth something. Or maybe plant evidence on another person. Or discover more about the people.

As it is, I consider it a waste of a quest. It's strange to me that so many people love this quest

So OP you nailed it, it's just a boring quest.

You have a cave. And a bunch of bandits to kill. There are literally dozens of ways you could pull this off (pretty much the same as whodunit). No need for Whodunit, there are lots of dungeons where you could do pretty much the same thing.

NO! I I'm enjoying DB so far, personally. Guess it has to do with (as Holy Assassin says) creativity, as my DB character Eradi~Kate isn't a slash & bash type at all. Not very strong. She's actually using the crappy Blade of Woe (along with some homemade poisons) to "EradiKate" her targets.

She just did that quest where you gotta sneak past all those Imperial guards. Man, that freaked me out because just as she was sneaking past one of the final guards he spotted her! :ooo: And she had to book outta there past all those other guards! Went around Cyrodiil for awhile until she had a nice stock of invisibility potions, came back and finished up the quest. Phew!

Yes. It's okay the first time through. Later play throughs are very boring to me.

It's not the same thing. It's an entirely different setting and set of circumstances. It's the same way different people enjoy different missions during the "Hitman" game series. Just because you don't enjoy it doesn't mean it's completely boring for everyone on Earth.

If the way you play the game is: "Walk in. Slash the hell out of everyone. Walk out." then it's no wonder you wouldn't enjoy the quest.

Apart from what I've mentioned, there doesn't seem to be any more options than any random decision to kill people. Like the other poster said, maybe you could have had options to plant evidence, like have a weapon in the house and kill someone with it, then reverse pickpocket it on someone else and have the others recognise it. Or have dialogue trees to twist peoples perspective on others, make up lies about what you've seen, etc.

This COULD be a cool quest, but as has been said it's only minimally different from killing bandits in a cave. If you disagree, please explain, WHAT CAN YOU DO THAT IS SO CREATIVE?

I quite enjoyed the quest to be honest. Only, I had one idea that I thought might have made it better.
You're only allowed into the house if you have no weapons on you. Instead the weapons are scattered throughout the house in various locations, along with various scrolls and potions etc.
A bit similar to the restaurant scene in The Godfather, only in a mansion in Skingrad!

It depends on what type of character you have. I always have really well-behaved characters with low to 0 infamy (Holy Crusader). So when I had to do that quest with my Imperial I hated it. On the other hand, I recently made a bloodthirsty Dunmer assassin, so when I get to that quest..... :gun:

It's priceless when the last survivor, who has been supportive all the time, realizes that it was you who did it as you are drawing your dagger.

All caps isn't cruise control for cool, bro. :P

Anyway, basically just try out different ways of killing people. You don't have to deal with any consequences for doing so, and none of them are hostile by default, so it's basically a playground. I shouldn't have to explain it, because it's really not as complicated as you're making it out to be.

I'm not saying it's complicated at all. Quite the opposite. It's basic as hell. You're the one who claims it's different from just any random killing, but I ain't seeing any explanation as to how.

Right. Like I say above, aside from some of the dialog (which is much the same no matter what order you kill people) there's really not much difference from walking into a bandit cave and killing them. Or a Inn. Or a city. Pretty much the same thing.

I've never done that. I've always tried to play along, and kill them in isolation. But where is the fun in that? Oh that person is asleep I'll kill him, or that person is alone I kill here, or I'll put a poison apple out. Same as pretty much anywhere.

Also I never claimed that it was boring for everyone. I said it was boring for me (and apparently others). I also said it lacks creativity and has alot of missed potential. But despite that obviously some people don't find it boring, for reasons unknown.

Therein lies the problem. There's no explanation! There's no secret, nothing spectacular or profound. It's a house. You get to kill people in it. You could send them all in a Frenzy, or get up real close and finish them with a single blow of a warhammer, or kill them in anyway you please. Sure, you get the opportunity to do that in other places too, but in caves / forts / ruins they're all hostile towards you, so you have to be careful, and in bars / inns / cities you have to deal with guards.

I never said the quest was the stuff of legends, or the most memorable moment of all time. But it's not boring either. At least not unless you've already played the game extensively and thus have already experimented with things enough to no longer find it interesting. Or maybe you've just seen it hyped up too much on here and expected something incredible.

Unless you kill them without others seeing, which is how you do this quest unless you want to be attacked immediately.

Goodness, some strong opinions! I find the quest a creative concept and, with plenty of imagination, it is fun. I also agree that it has been overhyped because there is certainly much lost opportunity and potential that the quest could have but did not provide. Enjoyable? Yes. On my list of top favorite quests? No.
