Crash in CS whenever trying to preview NPC faces

Post » Wed Aug 03, 2011 1:21 am

Hello there everyone, recently i've been trying to change a few companion mods and have stumbled into a very annoying repeatable crash. Whenever you try to change an NPC's face or hair with the preview window on the Construction Set will crash. I've searched alot on the issue and cant find much on the issue outside of what is outlined here

http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/CS_Crashes EDIT: Apperently this isnt my problem, but mine is somthing very similar, just for Morrowind instead of Oblivion

Unfortunatly nothing in that fix seems to work. I dont see any sort of way to "check the Preview head box"

Naturaly not being able to see the face or hair im trying to use is a bit of a tough thing to deal with. A way to actually see what i'm trying to change would be wonderful.

Don't you want the Oblivion forum? Your question seem to imply as much.

No... this is the Morrowind Construction Set forum, this is where I meant to put it. It is a problem with the Morrowind Construction Set

Well, the CS wiki only pertains to the Oblivion CS.... it does not apply to MW, so that's why the mentioned fix makes no sense. :)

Do you get a warning when the CS crashes?

Well then thats the only information on the subject, and it isnt even pertaining to Morrowind apperently... Poop. Well what was stated as the problem there did seem to match up with my problem.

Still, I outlined what happens, if you try to change an NPC's face or hair with the preview box open, the game crashes, no warning, just a crash. I've checked with mutliple NPC's on multiple plugins, even on multiple systems.

I don't know for certain what's happening to you, but I can make a good guess.

The preview window's use is primarily to view animations. If you go to the creatures tab with the preview open and click on a creature, it will load into the preview window and start running idle animations so you can see4 what it does. The various creatures only have one mesh associated with them, but NPCs have several, one for each body part.

The preview window only loads one mesh at a time, so NPCs won't work in it. To just see different heads you can make a disposable cell and create a NPC, place it in the render window. Then double click the NPC and change heads or hairs, and save the NPC and you will see the changes made. You don't need the preview window.

To echo neildarkstar, I seem to recall some problems with the Preview window.
It should only be open when you need to Preview a mesh. It can cause problems if left open while you mod, since it always will be trying to update itself.

edit: worst spelling ever

Thanks Niel, I will try that. Seems like a bit of a poor decision on Bethesdas part to let such a fairly important feature have that big of a bug.
