Would you say Skyrim is a work of art?

Do you think Skyrim is made mainly for money and then (on second place) for fun/art, or the other way around?

Morrowind felt like art to me, beyond its gameplay and storyline, it felt like a work of art, the atmosphiric environments, a new detailed alien world for us to explore, creating a whole new world witheverything (even the hardship) realistic to make the player feel like they are actually exploring a world.

With Oblivion that feeling was gone for me, not that I'm saying Oblivion was a bad game, it was a very good one, it just didn't feel like a work of art to me. It seemed as though it was created mainly for money and action, rather then show actual belivable content. Things like fast travel, less customization and such were added to the game and made it more of a GAME than an actual WORLD.

It seems that Skyrim will also feel like a GAME, question is, will it find this balance between game and world, or will it fail in that aspect?

Do you percieve Skyrim as a work of art or as just a VERY GOOD GAME? Do you think it will feel more like a WORLD again?

I guess it's a mix of entertainment and art.
Just like films, only interactive.

Making money figures into most artists plans to some degree so wanting to make a profit certainly doesn't preclude something being a work of art.
Video games are creative so yes IMO they are an artform. That said most of them are bad art, derivitive and aimed at the lowest common denominator, but I'm hopeful that Skyrim won't be one of those.

I can't call every game out there a work of art. Even if it's a creation, it doesn't necessarily mean it's a work of art.

BTW: What is the skull made from? XD And... it LOOKS like a work of art, I guess.

I would say yes. Games and films are a work of art, music is art, painting is art. It's just a different medium of expression :celebration:

I would say all games are art, some are just better than others. Some Ilike whereas some I don't.

Very similar to paintings, there is some stuff in art galleries that I, to be polite do not like, but there is other stuff that is very good. It's a very subjective issue. Is graffitti art or crime?

Games have alot of art design involved and some of the concept art is phenominal and the same can be said of movies as well.

Depends on what you consider to be art. If by art you mean slapping a red dot on a white canvas and calling it abstract, then hauling in the cash from the impressionable public, then anything is art. However I believe art to be the result of creative effort. Not necessarily carrying any underlying meaning or such, but merely something that has taken time and thought and energy. By this definition, then yes, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim are all works of art.

Well a lot of artistic and creative input goes into Elder Scrolls games, so yes I'd say it was art. The fact they are creating a fantasy world means they need to be artistic to some degree.

Not all games are art. Movie tie-ins, shovelware and some mobile games I wouldn't consider art; they were just made for money and have very little passion behind them. At least I like to think Beth cares about their franchise a little bit more than EA and WB did whilst making the latest Harry Potter game...

It's a work of art for the devs I'm sure, and to me as a fan also - most good video games I consider art, probably a money maker for the company but that's true for every game.

Bethesda isn't anywhere near as bad as EA or Activision though, the worst thing they've ever done was horse armor - there've never been NPCs in game trying to sell us DLC that came out day 1, they don't have invasive DRM, you don't have to log into multiple online accounts(GFWL on steam games ugh...) to play the game, etc. etc.
