Still can't use a bow properly.

Post » Wed Aug 03, 2011 5:54 pm

I don't know if anyone noticed but in the trailer, when he draws his bow the arrow is resting near his top knuckle on the left side of the bow, the same as in Oblivion (I don't know about the earlier games). Now in reality it should be resting on his thumb to the right hand side of the bow.

I noticed this ages ago but haven't seen any posts about it, so I thought I'd mention it. Not that it bothers me it's just an observation.

Um, it's been ages since I used a bow.

I'm a righty

When I knock the arrow, I hold the bow horizontal with my left hand palm down. This lets the arrow rest on the bow and my finger as I raise the bow to verticle; it places the arrow on my left knuckle.

Not sure i it's rightl I was taught that in Hunter Safety many moons ago.

And this argument has happened before. I'l lay 5:1 that the left knuckle is correct ;)

I've always shot with it resting on my thumb, on the "outside," but I've never had any proper instruction, so. I'm curious what "real" archers have to say.

When I was younger I trained in Ninjutsu and was taught to use a bow the same way that I mentioned but having just looked on Youtube I see that in Olympic and also more traditional western long bow archery they do use bows the same as in the game but if you check out Japanese archery they use the same method I was taught, so my mistake there are different styles.

Yeah I always thought that the arrow goes on the underside, because I remember learning that somewhere, and being surprised.

Maybe there are multiple styles?

You know there are many different bow grips right? All of them correct in their own way?

I wouldn't consider "ninjitsu" the best source of information on anything, not even ninjas. =/

I think both ways can be used.

most archers (from my experience of bow hunting and watching other archers) angle the bow like this / while holding this in your left hand it creates a nice little nook for the arrow to rest as you draw it. the way you described would have it on the bottom of the bow and would allow the arrow to drop to the ground.

I've generally seen it against the finger as opposed to the thumb. A tactical advantage is that if you don't have sights (which wasn't so common back then), you could follow the arrow shaft to aim. One difference that Japanese archers that I know of was that instead of drawing with fingers hooked, the nock was usually pinched. That and the draw style was much different than western archery.

Just refering to my previous post. There are different styles, check out japanese archery on Youtube, you'll see that they use a different grip to western archery.
