Courier's past

Post » Sun Aug 07, 2011 2:44 am

I think I've discovered the courier's story! so w we know that before the war big mt. did a meteorological experiment in a town called Hopeville that went wrong, and we can guess this is what caused horrible storms that ripped apart entire NCR companies on their way to the Mojave during the first battle of Hoover Dam. now my guess is that Hopeville was a small settlement after the war, and it is where both Ulysses and The Courier were born. ( just for the record I don't think they were brothers) At some point before the horrible storms hit the region the Courier decided he wanted to see the world, left and got a job as a courier, but this somehow caused unintended issues for Hopeville and those contributed to storms destroying the region when the NCR passed through. Ulysses survived this event and went hunting for the courier in the Mojave, although he soon gave up, presumed the courier was dead, and started wolfhorn ranch. A few years later in 2281 for whatever reason Ulysses was doing courier work and was about to deliver the platinum and saw the couriers name next on the list he then decided to hunt the courier and for some reason try to revive pre war USA.

this would explain why Chris Avellone said "I also have a lot of love for Ulysses in Fallout, only because I like the idea of someone hunting my player for reasons of his own, and then hearing the reasons why… and realizing how important even the smallest of my actions are for the people of the wasteland – living or dead" because he implies the courier wasn't aware of his/her actions that caused Ulysses to be mad and explains last part "living or dead" because the courier affected the survivors of the divide and the non survivors. This also explains why Ulysses said that the Courier knows the road to the divide in his audio log at Big Empty.

Well your theory is good but the Courier isn't given a past its a blank past for the courier the player is supposed to choose his/her own backstory made up by themselves and Obsidian left it blank for that reason. So i don't think the courier is from the divide area.

I agree. I don't think either of them will be from the Divide. Otherwise, Ulysses would already know what was there.

the devs said that there were a few things they knew about the courier these could be things like you were shot in the head, but I was thinking they would determine things that you can't chose even in real life like where you were born and they were refering to the dialog options throughout the game when they say you pick your back story, and Lonesome Road would explain your early life. But i don't know maybe I'm wrong, guess we'll find out soon!

"You can go home courier"

Yeah... I think the op might have stumbled onto something here.

"There are rumors of survivors from the Divide, but these are viewed as legends, like the Sierra Madre, the Big Empty, and the Burned Man."

Mhmm. Welcome home courier.

"Nothing there? Like the Big Empty? The Sierra Madre? No, the Old World sleeps there, sure as the flag I carry. The Courier knows the way. And at the Divide, they and I - there, we'll have an ending to things."

How else would the courier know the way if he/she hasnt been there before? The old world sleeps there? Theres probably a vault.

Perhaps the Courier doesn't know the way - his Pip-Boy does.

Nothing here suggests that either of them are from the Divide. Why would Ulysses go to the Think Tank if he already knew what was there? If he was from the Divide, it wouldn't make sense for him to have to return to it by such a circuitous route - and ask questions about it.

Ulysses uses metaphorical language in the tapes. He refers to the Think Tank as Gods - but no one is questioning that. You can't take what he says at face value.

Yeah. I think people are reading WAY too much into the very little info we have.

I noticed that. I thought it was very colorful and speaks to his philosophy. Any being with emense power could be considered a god or goddess. I think he might think along those lines.

Ulyesses also said the following:
Ulysses: He's gone to the Sierra Madre. That's a special kind of hell. He won't come back. Someone smarter, tougher's going to kill him. If the Madre doesn't.

I think he could have been referring to you the Currier which makes me wonder how awesome a character the Currier was before he received that bullet. The Currier definitely has a past and I can't wait to find out what that past is. One thing though is that at some point in the past You and Ulysses met, the exact details of this meeting are unknown, along with the location of said meeting. Perhaps it was at his ranch, perhaps the meeting was a simple conversation at a bar. Maybe you said something so profound in a simple conversation that it changed his entire life (whatever the event we all can agree it did have a profound effect on his life).

Another thing I thought of, although not exactly about his past, is this:

Christine says in DM - "The Divide, where the two messengers, the two couriers, fought beneath an ancient flag, at the edge of the world." This could be interpreted in two ways: they fought each other, or they fought together against a third party.

However, Dog/God says - "The battle between the two couriers, beneath the torn skies and the Old World flag... each bearing a message for the other." This would seem to imply that they fought against each other.

But, perhaps it's a bit more simple. Assuming that the grammar is correct, the ellipses would stand, most likely, for an unfinished thought or a deliberate pause. Maybe the Courier will have to fight through a raging battle to get to Ulysses - and Ulysses is fighting through the same battle to get to the Courier. If they are both trying to get to each other through an actual fight between two other parties, it would fit both quotes.

The Christine and Dog/God quotes are in the future, remember. They are talking about the events of LR after they were already finished.

im still under the impression that ulysses was the one who started the storms in the divide unearthing what was there, its not like we visited the siere madre and the Big MT the moment they left. its been some time between Ulysses' visit to those places and our visit.
but also peopleeem to never quote is that the 2 endings from DM, it talks about the battle between the 2 couriers pretty much saying it was an epic battle that people heard about all thru the wasteland. to be honest i think if he choses the opposite faction as us and he had different dialogue/reasons/endings, it would actually increase the replay value for alot of people and actually give some people reason to actually side with ncr or CL lol.
