New Vegas crash to desktop on load - Win 7 64-bit using Stea : Fallout: New Vegas

Hello there. As a longtime Bethesda fan (since Morrowind), it saddens me that I can't get Fallout: New Vegas to run on my new PC. The Launcher seems to work fine, as does the initial loading screens (including the one with the roulette wheel). However, as soon as the actual game is about to start it crashes to desktop with the following error:

I've tried re-verifying the game cache and running in compatibility mode for winXP sp3 and Vista sp 2, but nothing seems to help. I WAS able to get the game to play for a little while at first, enough to unlock the "kick in the head" achievement. I've seen multiple posts describing similar issues, but none of the recommended fixes have helped. Is there a patch on the way? If not, how can I go about getting a refund?

Are you running any mods? Are you launching with fnv4gb_nvse? Are you using Configator to configure your .ini's? Crashing on start up is often either a mod problem or a graphics problem.

No, no, and no. I'm using the default launching tool to configure. I failed to mention my graphics card: Asus engt430 (which equates to Geforce GT 430) running the latest nvidia drivers.
All my other games run fine, even my install of fallout3 which is the non-steam version (last time I checked).

EDIT: Just checked and fallout 3 is crashing in the same manner.

Is this "Configator" a separate program?

Ok, just found the configurator program and used it to turn a bunch of settings down with no success.

Depending on your computer specs you may want to up the settings to get it to work, if you're running a newer rig with 64 but OS, dual or quad core and 4 or more gig system ram with a decent video card you will need to turn it up. Interesting. I happen to have a quad core with 6 gigs memory. I will give your suggestions a try.

EDIT: fnv4gb doesn't help.
Neither does using Configator to raise graphics settings.

Try going back online with Steam and verify your cache then try using all the preload options in Configator. Then try launching the game from Steam (you have to stay online with it to do that.)
