Morrowind GOTY - Steam Frustrating Problems (Missing Files)

Post » Sun Aug 07, 2011 10:33 am

Hello there I bought the two games on steam today and wanted to start playing right away. But oh wait, I can't of course.

I am running on Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, and when I launch the game, and click on "NEW GAME" I get an error that "menu click.wav is missing", then I get an error that "a splash image is missing", then the game starts, I see a character, and the background is grey, then an in-game message that an MP3 Voice is missing, and when I press "yes" to continue, the game is crashing.

Obviously something wrong is happening here. I asked on the steam forums but didnt get any help, if I don't here, I don't know what will I do.

I checked the thread for Windows 7/Vista help but all the links don't work (nice one!!!)..

Can anybody please help me - I tried VERIFYING FILES in steam, reinstalled 5 times, restarted PC, uninstalled, restarted-> reinstalled. Not working...

I posted the following for someone else having a similar problem (I know you said you have verified and reinstalled - but try it *after* following Step 1):

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU PERFORM ALL 3x STEPS IN ORDER :

Step 1) Ensure Steam is running under an Administrator account

a) Ensure that Steam is not running. Right Click it in your taskbar (near the clock) and click 'Exit'
B) Locate and open your Steam installation folder. If you performed a default installation then this should be C:\Program Files (x86)\Valve\Steam\
c) right click 'Steam.exe' and click 'Properties'
d) Click the 'Compatibility' tab
e) Click 'Change settings for all users'
f) Click 'Run this program as an administraor'
g) Click 'Ok' twice
h) Open Steam and attempt to launch the game again

Step 2) Verify local game cache

a) Open your Library in Steam
B) Right Click 'Morrowind' and select 'Properties'
c) Click the 'LOCAL FILES' tab
4) Click 'VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME CACHE...'
5) When this finishes, click 'DEFRAGMENT CACHE FILES'
6) When this finishes, attempt to launch the game again

Step 3) Delete local game cache and download again

a) Open your Library in Steam
B) Right Click 'Morrowind' and select 'Delete Local Content'

NB: This will completely remove the game from your system - I'd say to back up your saves first, but it doesn't sound like you should have any.

c) Download and install Morrowind again, then see if it launches

If you don't get any joy with this, post back here and let us know your complete steam installation path.

I will try it and report back. Thanks a million for the fast response.
Meanwhile I found this - http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1170440-windows-7-cant-find-files/page__st__20 - I have the EXACT same problem, but his last reply didn't make any sense. I don't see any game files on my other disks. Hmm.. This is really weird.

No probs.

I just had a read through the other thread, and honestly, I think he screwed something up without realising it earlier in the process.

If you are using the steam version of the game then I don't think the issue is related at this point (but we'll have to wait and see).

I think you could probably skip Step 2 there actually, but it won't hurt to try it.

I just ran steam as "an administrator" and tried the game, same thing, verified, same thing. Deleted the game, downloaded it again, same thing :[

Oh wow, I just entered my STEAM Root folder and saw the same files he saw "ProgramFlow and etc". I guess my game is looking for the game in Steam\data files, and not steam\steamapps\common\morrowind\data files. I wonder how can you change the directory it runs for.

Are there any registry entries ?

EDIT: Copied everything where I found the files and it worked.. Wondering why it is looking in a different directory :(

Thanks for the help mate!
