New Engine Capabilities

Post » Tue Aug 25, 2009 9:06 pm

Better weather effects, distant landscape, better trees (for god's sake, NO MORE PAPER TREES!!)

And no ladders. They already stated that their new engine still can't support ladders (at least for NPCs)

Mounted Combat!

My avatar gives it away tho, being a horse lover I can only pray that we get at Least the same level of mounts that we had in TES IV - being able to do battle from horseback would be simply AWESOME.

I have the utmost faith in Bethesda. I think it'l definatly have the WOW! factor. Check pete hines' latest tweet:

"Showing Skyrim to Euro staff and some distr. partners today. Very high praise. Couple folks said they were stunned how good it was. Woot!"

Which isn't encouraging for the new engine capability.

Considering that a other companies (like Larian Studio) had no problem having ladders using the Gamebryo engine and that most game developers have no problem with NPC AI climbing ladders in their in-house one.

Do you have the quote? I can't seem to find the full interview anywhere.

Actually, now they are saying it's a brand new engine. Earlier they said it was thoroughly reworked GameBryo. In any case, "tweaked a bit" falls far from the truth.

Edit: From ElderScrolls' Twitter-account: "Bethblog Seeing lots of speculation about #tesv game engine. It's brand new... and it's spectacular!"

Well that can be added to my list under climbing. I have to agree, if the new engine can't handle the players and NPCs using ladders then that's a serious problem! That's like saying you can't swim with this new spectactular engine!

TO THE DEVS: Add the ability for the players and NPCs to climb and use ladders! If you current AI code is the problem, throw it out and start over. If the AI fails something as simple as climbing, its prone to fail in other areas too. Better to delay the game a little to fix this than to release a title with bad AI.

As I said in a thread of my own, better water.

Rivers should actually have flowing water, and the big Arctic sea north of Skyrim, should look dangerous, not completely calm.

I will cry tears of joy for dx11 and all the goodness it brings. Also easier importing of animations, cause its a PAIN in the butt with the old engine.

What would be the downside? Most likely the game would require a quad-core processor or better for PC and the initial loading time would be much larger. However, I would be more than willing to wait 1-2 minutes for the game to load if it means I don't get my immersion broken every time I enter or exit somewhere. This also means a much more robust and complex 'cell' system that allows for location-based streaming, instead of load areas.

I don't think the initial loading time would be anywhere near that, and I don't think you would absolutely require a quad core. An Intel Core i7 980X + 4350 = poop, and by that I mean it would still be very GPU dependent.

I hope they implement something like the grab/pull system in Amnesia: The Dark Descent. You actually have to click to grab the door, then push or pull to open it. The effect applies to other pick up-able physics objects in the game. That would be rather nifty in Skyrim in my opinion.

I did enjoy that, but I don't think it belongs in Skyrim. Also, on a side note, that game scared the living **** out of me. I still haven't finished it.

I'm going to try and keep this realistic...

- Fewer loading screens
- Improved facial animation and lip-syncing
- No 'Ice-skating' in third person view

Some of the main things I hope Bethesda does in Skyrim has already been done by Rockstar in Red Dead Redemption. The world was seamless, the character animations were absolutely fantastic, the physics were spot on, and the graphics were incredible. If Rockstar can do it in RDR, I'm confident that Bethesda can do it in Skyrim.

The fact that Todd Howard said that he loved Red Dead Redemption also boosts my confidence, hopefully he will be inspired!

Improved animations and lighting are what I would most like to see from the engine.

I want to see torches crackling and flickering in caves, casting shadows that feel alive.

I mainly want better animations. Morrowind/oblivion the people just move weird.

Animations are probably the only thing that really bothered me in Oblivion.. FPS mode should feel like Mirrors edge or Call of Duty, and 3rd person mode should be kinda like Assassins Creed.

Character models just plain look crappy IMO.. If they can do anything to that, im already sold.

IMO a more fantasy style setting would be appropriate for the environment, although the architecture would stay true to the Lore.. Keep the Cosmic Skies!!!!!

It's minor, but... I want cliffs and overhangs, and other more malleable terrain options. I'm still hoping that Beth worked some partial procedural generation into their worldmapping, so that they could less time doing the gruntwork of adding every little log, rock and alchemical plant, and more time creating unique little spots in the world.

One thing I will definitely expect is fotprints, and not just 2D sprites, in the snow. With the amount of snow they have in it, they'rebound to use some good graphics. I expect them to stay there for about a minute after you leave them unless you leave the area.

I'd want more of Mirror's Edge and Assassins Creed than COD. The player characters in COD move as if they have no weight behind them, but in ME and AC you get a real feeling of momentum and inertia.

The biggest thing for me would be improved character models, faces especially. After that, better designs for the weapons and armor, with a more realistic design for the crossguards being my main wish. From there, a seamless world and larger play area. Go for something that's maybe twice as large as Oblivion. Although, with such a mountainous terrain, Skyrim will have the benefit of a broken line of sight. Perhaps the largest illusion breaker when it came to size in Oblivion was seeing cities in the not so far distance. They were too close together.
