Yet another "Crash to desktop after intro video" thr

Post » Tue Aug 09, 2011 8:45 am

Hi all,

I was hesitant to post, but after reading pages upon pages of threads about this issue, I'm still left without a solution. I have the infamous crash to desktop following the intro video. Obviously, my specs are more than enough. Needless to say, I'm more than a bit frustrated, at this point.

I've posted my DXDIAG below, but I'd also like to add what I've done to try and fix this issue. A little background, I just built this PC a couple weeks ago, and it's been running wonderfully with every game, except for Fallout: New Vegas (Starcraft 2, Crysis 2, The Witcher 2 all maxed).

Abbreviated specs, if you don't feel like looking at DXDIAG:

Intel i7 2600 (with CoolerMaster Hyper 212 cooler)
8GB RAM (Corsair XMS3 1333MHz PC3-10666)
ASUS P8P67-M PRO LGA 1155 motherboard
Lexar Crucial 128GB m4 SSD
Asus ATI Radeon HD6950 2GB DDR5 PCI-E video card
Asus Xonar DX PCI-E sound card
Corsair CMPSU-750-Watt TX Series power supply
Windows 7 x64 (SP1, fully updated)

Things I've tried (and failed):
1. Installing previous versions of Catalyst drivers (after uninstalling old drivers/cleaning with Driver Sweeper)
2. Reformatted computer with 32 bit Windows XP (as well as several clean installs of Windows 7 - 32/64 bit)
3. d3d9.dll fix.
4. Edited the .ini's to remove intro video.
5. Edited the .ini's to change bUseThreadedAI=0 to 1, and added iNumHWThreads=2
6. Put .exe's in compatibility mode, set to Run as Administrator (Steam run as Admin as well)
7. Verfied FFDShow is not on system.
8. Reinstalled/verified game files
9. Installed latest DirectX build
10. Installed Windows 7/New Vegas on 1TB SATA drive
11. Ran Memtest86 (no errors on 15 passes)
12. Made sure Catalyst Control Center was closed
13. Politely asked the game to not crash
14. Updated BIOS

Also, UAC is not on, and I am not overclocking. Oddly enough, the game runs fine on my laptop :verymad:

I may have missed a fix, as I've been troubleshooting this going on a week now. I'm nearing the point where I'll just consider it money wasted and not want to bother anymore.

I will gladly gift someone a game on Steam if they can get this solved for me. (seriously)

I'm having the same issue as you, and probably spent longer trying to get it to work. I've contacted Steam support; below is what they sent me, something might work for you. I've also sent an email to Bethesda's support a couple days ago and have yet to receive a reply (I'll post it when/if they reply).

Steam Support
Spoiler
If you are currently running Vista or Windows 7, please complete the instructions in the following link:

Title: Windows 7 and Vista Troubleshooting
Link: http://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5688-IFHZ-2170

The remaining steps apply to *all* versions of Windows.

Please also verify the GCF for this game as outlined here:

Title: Verifying Game Cache Files (GCF)
Link: http://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335

Note: Files may fail to verify. This normal and can be ignored.

Then test the issue.

If you still have difficulty, you may also need to manually run secondary installers required by this game.

Exit Steam entirely.

Browse to your Fallout: New Vegas installation folder (Usually C:\Program files\Steam\Steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\)

Run the following installers:

...\Steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\Redists\vcredist_x86.exe

...\Steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\Redists\directx\DXSETUP.exe

Reboot your computer and test the issue again.

If the issues persist, please complete these guides:

Title: This game is currently unavailable
Link: http://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4595-WEXN-6831

Title: Games do not run after 'Preparing to Launch'
Link: http://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=6218-USFX-5568

If you are still having difficulty after going through this process, further support for this title is handled by a third party support department - please follow the instructions in the link below to contact the support provider to troubleshoot this issue:

Title: Fallout: New Vegas
Link: http://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4727-YFJN-5518

Please let us know if you experience further difficulties, or if you have additional questions or concerns.

Anytime you wish you can view your question online:

Unfortunately, nothing in their response helped. Thanks, anyway. I hope Bethesda gives you some good info so you can sort this out for yourself!

I'm having the same issue. Searched all over the internet for a solution but haven't found one yet.

I believe the problems lies with the video card. I recently bought a new one (exactly the same as you have: Asus ATI Radeon HD6950 2GB) and that's when the problems started. Before I was able to play the game with no problems whatsoever (ATI Radeon HD2600Pro) but after I installed the new video card I couldn't get the game to load (crashes to Windows after the loading wheel, same Windows version as you have btw).

I am able to play all other (newer) games without any problems and at full specs (with the exception of Call of Duty: Black Ops...before the video card upgrade I was able to play it with no problems, now it loads and all I get is a white screen).

Every time ATI posts a new driver I keep hoping that it will solve the problem...but it hasn't happened yet.

Perhaps you could try a different video card (if you have one lying around) to see if it is indeed the trouble maker. I sold my old one, so I am unable to try this unfortunately.

I'm fairly certain it's the video card, if it weren't for one slight snag - F:NV was working when I first built the computer. Then I bought an SSD and upon reinstalling Windows and such, F:NV didn't work anymore. I said, "Hey, must be the SSD", so I removed it and installed back to SATA drive. No luck (and not work losing an SSD over!). The only other difference I saw was that a new driver came out between pre-SSD and post-SSD, so I ran Driver Sweeper and installed the 11.6 drivers, but to no avail. I even tried the 11.8 beta, but...yup, not working.

Is your 6950 the stock firmware or did you do that unlock hack where it becomes a 6970?

Hmmm...strange that it did work for you at first. My card is just running on stock firmware.

I did do another search just now for fixes and tried some (last time I looked was quite a while back). And I FINALLY got the game to work!!

The d3d9.dll fix did it for me. I know you tried it already, but perhaps you need to try a different version? The site I found the one that works for me has got two different versions on it (http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34778.

The one that works for me is the first one. Fallout now recognises my card as an NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS. But still...it works.

I hope you get it to work!

The NVIDIA d3d9.dll file worked for your ATI card? Weird. I didn't try that one because I figured it wouldn't work. I'll give it a shot!

The one that works for me is the first one. Fallout now recognises my card as an NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS. But still...it works.

I hope you get it to work!

I am utterly baffled. It works now. It wasn't the d3d9.dll, as I didn't try it before running the game. I am as clueless about it as before. I reinstalled Windows 7/64 bit again, with the only difference being that my sound card's utility program no longer runs on launch. I'm guessing that might've been it, but who knows? I'm not going to question it, I'm just going to celebrate! Too bad I don't feel like playing right now! It would svck if it decides not to work tomorrow!
