The automatic rifle

Before the patch, a lot of players used it. After the patch, nobody uses it. It's about as useless as the light machine gun....I'de rather just have a fully modded Minigun, thank you very much.

^This.

Depending on my primary weapon and my ammo "loadout" I would only carry an LMG to pair with the All American or the AR to pair with the Gobi as a "panic" weapon when multiple mobs get in too close like a swarm of Cazadors. If you have the shotgun perks though the Riot Shotgun is a much better "panic" weapon because of the knockdown and Critical hit potential.

If you want pure DPS the Minigun is the way to go, saving the AP ammo for the "red shield" mobs...

The thing is that a gun with that barrel length should have a smaller spread than it does. Sure the BAR wasn't accurate in long sustained fire but in short bursts it didn't look like somebody fired a shotgun at the target when you fired at it from ten feet away.

A .308 rifle cannot be accurate in full automatic fire even if you give it a barrel the length of an elephant trunk. The sheer kick of the round and the flinch it induces in the shooter won't allow it. With one exception (G3, which uses a different cycling system from most conventional firearms), All .308 battle rifles (M14, FAL, Sig SG510 etc.) started off with an automatic fire function and ended up fired strictly on single shots after their combat performance was examined.

The BAR was not popular for its accuracy but rather for portability: it was lighter than real machine guns, and soldiers attacking enemy trenches or fortifications needed a weapon capable of delivering suppressive fire on the move. Accuracy wise, it svcked. Big time.
