WOW..I have totally missed the boat after finishing the game

I know this has been posted a million times with everyone talking about roleplaying. I hadn't really thought about it; was just thinking about finishing the game, and nothing else. So I ran through much of the quests and without doing any exploitive measures, just hurried the experience.

I've done a 180, because my character has too much junk, and is too powerful. There's no challenge anymore.

Now I'm going to restart with an assassin/mage build. Was thinking atronarch, apprentice, or thief sign.
Majors:
Destruction
Restoration
Illusion
Light Armor
Marksmanship
Blade
Alchemy

Bonus: Willpower and Intelligence

These are just some thoughts. I was thinking about putting something I rarely use, like personality; just so at the end, I can max the minors before I get 100% in the majors.

Let me know what you guys think, cuz I know there are many more experienced roleplayers than this yeoman. Thanks guys and girls.

Would it be a mistake to choose my majors according to how my character would actually be? Or should I change a couple of things to make sure I can efficiently level my character as the enemies get more difficult?

Being too powerful does svck, as does having too much gold and too many uber weapons.

However, this is not down to build or levelling to fast.. but rather how you play.

In your next game, dont make amassing tonnes of loot your goal... dont always level up just cos you can. Ive accrued several consequtive levels ups before, but just use wait next to a bed to avoid it.

only carry what you would realistically be able to carry If you want to be immersed this is absolutely the golden rule. ie one sword, one suit of armour, few health potions.. and thats it. With this in mind you wont be collecting every rusty iron sword you come across.

Picking two majors you know you will use will level you up evenly.. heck even just one will. Blade or athletics will do.

build is very irrelevant in oblivion I find. Blade, athletics, marksman, sneak... these are the main skill I always use but never pick them as majors.

I'm concerned that you may be headed for the same problem as your previous character. If you max blade, marksman and destruction, you will become rather godlike if you don't build in some serious gimps (such as never increase endurance and wear no armor). Also, consider how high you want your character to level. I recommend at least 20, but no higher than 30. Selecting some 'never touch' majors is a good way to cap your character if you want (and much more RP to me than never sleeping to enforce a level cap).

I pick a main killing skill as a major to max. Then a couple more majors to max that I can make sure level as slow or slower than that main killing skill. Then I pick four more to never touch. I also pick some attributes to totally ignore, as I find that really helps 'define' the character. If I build a fragile character, I will not raise strength or endurance for example.

Isn't that the point of efficient leveling? To pick skills you don't use as majors, so that you can build and efficient killing machine? If I use skills that are my majors, then I will cap early when I sleep. He only maxes out at about 25-30 and only uses the skills where the attributes maxed. So my mage/assassin cannot wield and axe to save his life. That sort of thing.

I see the point of efficient leveling as to generate +5s for attributes at level up time. If one caps a character, then one has less levels to get attributes to disired levels. Fortunately for the way I play, this is eased quite a bit by ignoring several attributes, which makes it easier to improve the 'key' attributes that define the character. I also find picking 'never use' skills easy. My current character for example never has struck anything with fist, blunt or blade. Nor has she ever used a lockpick or played the speechcraft game. It all works together when one realizes that my character could therefore never earn good strength gain bonuses - that is fine because it is her nature to be physically weak as a kitten.

For me at least, I am trying to fine tune things for my desired level of challenge. I find that sweet spot with a 'glass cannon' character. My character can strike like a dragon. . . or crumple like a butterfly. She can survive quite well with patience and caution, but I never need fear her becoming boring or overpowered. Based on how you describe your previous character, it sounds like perhaps you are looking for a character that is capable but not overpowered.

Dunno if this makes any sense or just confuses things. Lol. :foodndrink:
