Dragons are....bad?

Post » Fri Aug 12, 2011 10:45 am

So Skyrim has me a bit confused. Morrowind and Oblivion have both seemed to indoctrinate the mainstream player that dragons are good and honorable. On the Imperial side, there's Akatosh who saves our behinds in Oblivion and is just generally highly revered, as well as the dual dragon-man imagery of Talos. In Morrowind, I think even that triangular Tribunal symbol has a dragon figure on it doesn't it?

That and cliffracers, which are evil, messed with dragons, which therefore must be good. :)

But seriously, why are all these awesome creatures so pissed?

The dragon symbol is the symbol of the empire. And not all the dragons are bad, Todd has said there are good ones in Skyrim.

Besides, most provinces are not so black and white, like Cyrodiil sees Akatosh as good but Skyrim sees Alduin as bad (Same but not the same, kinda hard to explain :D)

The dragon symbol on MW's cover is the Imperial crest. The Empire has a compact with Akatosh, and had dragons serving them in the future. They are the only race for which they are completely benevolent beings. For Nords and Redguards, dragons cary a time-eating, world-destroying (though not necessarily "evil") connotation. Just as a tornado is not evil because it destroys houses, dragons aren't evil because they destroy the world. They're just doing their job.

So would Akatosh be better (morally) describe in the same way as the daedra? With motives we interpret as good or bad depending on whether or not we like their "above-us" will? Puts a new spin on the divines/aedra.

Also, the whole world-eating thing confuses me. Why have Akatosh go to the trouble to save Nirn from Dagon only to get hungry a bit later?

Maybe it wasn't time for the end of the world yet. Maybe he was bound by the contract with Alessia. Maybe he just didn't want Dagon to succeed (he is pretty pissed at Dagon, after all).

Most of all, Akatosh and Alduin are a conflicted entity.

In response to your first post: The games haven't been telling us "Dragons are good". The Empire reveres dragons, but the games haven't painted them as benevolent beings.

In fact, the only time we've met a dragon, he seemed to be a mercenary fellow.

Because Akatosh and Alduin aren't the same God. Kind of, they're the same, but different.
Just believe me when I say, Akatosh doesn't want to eat the world, Alduin does. It's like the Gods have some sort of multiple personality disorder.

Akatosh is Imperial Propaganda, Akatosh is fake, Aludin is real. Akatosh is a meshup of Aludin and the Auri-el.

He seems to have taken Shezarr's position as the champion of (cyrodiilic) man as well.

He's the symbol of the Empire, not of (oppressed) man. So that's continuity, law, order, eternal rule, ect. Shezarr's about freedom, liberty (and death).

Too lazy to grab faith in the empire. :)
