It's a book that acts to fill the gap between Oblivion and Skyrim. There's another one out later this year.

I'm not sure I'd call it amazing.....

I really wish I had known it was only going to be half of a book before I started it though. Now they got me...

From the review: Prince Attrebus continues on his seemingly doomed quest to obtain a magic sword that holds the key to destroying the deadly invaders.

Seriously? Dudes looking for a magic sword? Could this author's writing get any more cliche? Dear Bethesda. If you're going to intrust your series to someone, make sure they aren't a hack. Otherwise you look dumb, and the series itself looks bad by association.

Also: the spy Colin

First of all, I've NEVER heard of anyone in TES named Colin. Secondly, it's a terrible name for a character who's a spy. He sounds like someone's red headed step child.

You do realize the guy is writing what Bethesda wants him to right? The story is Bethesda's they just hired Gregory Keyes to write it. Either way I like it and have the second one preordered.

Touché. :P

Exactly. They have set out the major plot points, he just decides how to get to them. And even then, what he writes has to be approved by Bethesda.

Also, if you break it down like that preview anything can sound cliché and stupid. "A reincarnation of an ancient hero has to find ancient artifacts to stop the big-bad guy from taking over Vvardenfell!" See? Morrowind's main quest is a lot more complex than that, but you can break it down just like anything else.

Basically, if you enjoy the books in-game, you will enjoy The Infernal City.

Well that just reflects badly on Bethesda even more. I mean, it is a book based off a video game, so I really shouldn't be surprised. Maybe I would have read it in 8th grade, when I read "The Fall of Reach" (Halo book) but I don't think I could make it through now without shaking my head. I mean, magic sword? Really? Let me guess, he also learns an important lesson about friendship.

This is a fairly good explanation of the phenomenon. However, you can already start to see there are a few more layers to the story. So I'll ask, what's the significance of the sword in in Infernal City? I'm actually gonna go find out myself.

My birthday! Yay, thanks for sharing that, I'm actually excited for the book now!

By the way, I really enjoyed The Infernal City, it's worth a buy if you're a fan of The Elder Scrolls series.

Spoiler

The sword is Umbra, with Umbra (the spirit), being the man behind the man/big bad of the books.

I'm glad to see it ties into existing lore. I really shouldn't be giving my opinion because I don't like modern fantasy literature in general, even if I like fantasy games and sometimes movies/shows.

...except that sword is UMBRA! The description is misleading, that's not really what the first book is about at all. Looking for the sword is not the focus of the story, at least not in the first book.

... dude. You're talking about cliches when Morrowind's plot was stopping an omnicidal maniac from brainwashing everyone and Taking over The The World ™, Oblivion's plot was stop a demonic invaision from Destroying The world ™ and the upcoming Skyrim is about stopping Dragons who want to, you guessed it, Destroy The World ™.

Now, see what I just did there? Did you see it? Morrowind is far from cliche and Oblivion, while the main plot is pretty standard, is not bad, and my brief synopsis did neither justice. While yes, Attrebus has to go and find Umbra, there is more to the story than that. And of course, the cliche-accusation does not mention the fact that Annaig is now bound body and soul to Umbriel, let alone the origins and motivations of the city and its ruler, Vuhon, as well as how it and he ties into the story of grizzled, embittered old Ezhmaar Sul.

See? It's all a matter of perspective. I wouldn't call the TES novels cliched at all. In fact, most cliches, on the rare occasion they happen, tend to be done in such a way as to be pretty enjoyable because cliches are the rivets of communication. They became cliches because they worked, they were the strong ideas that devoured the weak and, when they no longer are fit for humanity's mental environment, will be devoured in turn (damsel in distress, you... actually won't be missed that much at all, actually. Nyeh nyeh).

It astounds me every time someone calls TES cliche as an insult.
