... dude. You're talking about cliches when Morrowind's plot was stopping an omnicidal maniac from brainwashing everyone and Taking over The The World , Oblivion's plot was stop a demonic invaision from Destroying The world and the upcoming Skyrim is about stopping Dragons who want to, you guessed it, Destroy The World .
Now, see what I just did there? Did you see it? Morrowind is far from cliche and Oblivion, while the main plot is pretty standard, is not bad, and my brief synopsis did neither justice. While yes, Attrebus has to go and find Umbra, there is more to the story than that. And of course, the cliche-accusation does not mention the fact that Annaig is now bound body and soul to Umbriel, let alone the origins and motivations of the city and its ruler, Vuhon, as well as how it and he ties into the story of grizzled, embittered old Ezhmaar Sul.
See? It's all a matter of perspective. I wouldn't call the TES novels cliched at all. In fact, most cliches, on the rare occasion they happen, tend to be done in such a way as to be pretty enjoyable because cliches are the rivets of communication. They became cliches because they worked, they were the strong ideas that devoured the weak and, when they no longer are fit for humanity's mental environment, will be devoured in turn (damsel in distress, you... actually won't be missed that much at all, actually. Nyeh nyeh).
