The little things we do in Oblivion.

Post » Mon Aug 15, 2011 1:58 am

By little things I'm talking about stuff we do and don't care about if we do it or not, we just...do it for the hell of it.

A few of the little things I can think of are:

Chasing deer around, shooting dozens of arrows at them and miss most of the time but you won't stop until they are dead, even though you could easily run up to one and punch it to make it die.

Bear rolling. This has got to be one of the most fun things to do, going up into the mountains to find bears only to watch and follow their lifeless bodies flailing down the mountainside.

Role-Playing. Because I know someones gonna say it.

What are some "little things" you guys do in oblivion?

It′s always the little things that are the most important. What comes to mind is just strolling around, anywhere really, and just take it all in. The sound, the view, the smell (!). It′s in moments like that my character truly comes alive and not just exists but lives in Cyrodiil.

For my part roleplaying is not a "little thing" that I do in Oblivion. It is how I play the game. It is why I play the game. Roleplaying is the game. There is no Oblivion for me without roleplaying.

With that out of the way, one of my favorite things to do in Morrowind was run/walk around Vvardenfell. I was never able to do it in Oblivion, due to this game's limitations. But now the Tamriel Heightmaps mod and Side's Sailing Ships mod allow me to do even better. Starting from Anvil I can sail around Hammerfell, High Rock, Skyrim, Morrowind, Black Marsh, Elsweyr, Valenwood, circle Summerset Isle and back to Anvil. Depending on wind speed and the type of ship my character is sailing and how much we dawdle to just goof off along the way, the trip can take as long as twenty-four real-time hours to complete.

This is by far my favorite little thing to do in Oblivion.

I'm interested in the tamriel heightmaps mod, but how does that interact with mods that work specifically on the one province? I'm using the Elsweyr mod and it's fantastic. I've also seen one called valenwood improved, and a couple hammerfell mods that add some towns. I think there's a mod that adds some morrowind stuff too. Do you use any of those or is the heightmaps mod just fine by itself?

1. I always wear Huntsman Leather pants and moccasins when in the wilderness. I never wear armor when running around. When it rains, I wear a Tattered Robe with matching hood.

2. My weapon of choice is my Iron Bow (with matching arrows of course), as it is the only bow that looks like it is made of wood. I modified the damage capabilities in the Construction Set a bit so it would perform realistically and effectively. I also use my poisoned Elven Dagger for close quarter combat.
3. I leave all weapons and tools that are larger than a dagger or a few arrows, as i will not use them and they will only weigh me down. Some of these include blunt weapons, shovels, rakes, large books, and alchemy tools (other than my handy mortar and pestle). I also do not pick up large and bulky foods, such as watermelons.
4. I always try to snipe my kills without the use of the reticle/crosshair.
5. I drink ale, beer, and wine with my foods as though I was actually eating. I also try to sit down in taverns, inns, or dining rooms when I eat.
6.Whenever I save my game, I try to make the thumbnail pic a landscape.
7. Whenever I am not actually fighting, I always put up my bow.
8. I always try not to use magic for anything, even enchantments.
9. I read the quest objective in my journal only once, and try to remember what I read as I try to complete it.
10. I turn off all subtitles, so I have to actually listen to what people say.
11. When I go to pick something up off of the ground, I always go into sneak mode to look like I am crouching.
12. I am a great hunter, and survive on the meat I get from kills and the money I get from selling them.
13. I always wonder why the houses in Cyrodiil are so big if everyone lives alone . . . :'(

You have to have Iliana's Elsweyr mod installed before you can run Tamriel Heightmaps, actually. With Tamriel Heightmaps installed Iliana's invisible walls preventing you from traveling south are gone - you can now travel all the way down to the coast.

I haven't actually used the other mods but from what I have read about them most of them (Tamriel Rebuilt's Hammerfell and thePOSTALdude's The Lands of Solstheim, Vvardenfell and Mournhold, for instance) are in their own worldspaces so they cannot conflict. There has been talk of integrating thePOSTALdude's mod into Tamriel Heightmaps but I don't think anything has been done about it yet.
