The Sanity of the Soon Deceased

We intercepted this correspondence on its way to the prison warden... We thought you may find it interesting, as it is a detailed account of your escape, and we must say we are suprised you left witnesses at all...

We Know

"As the local alchemist near the prison, and the only known expert in the trustworthiness of people, I was sent to evaluate a man who recently claimed he was wrongfully accused of his crime. This did not suprise me as the man was but a week from the gallows and as such he most likely was just biding for time. I wasn't wrong in my assumption he was guilty... But he was not biding for time...

My aforementioned profesion was brought into this simply because many of the guards had heard tale I could make a truth potion of some kind, and at the time I wasn't about to stop a story that could get me extra business (I had made a so called 'truth potion', its called liquor) and that I was a trustworthiness expert... To be honest I am nothing but a sham, I use liquor to loosen their lips and a small amount of sleeping agent and I ask the nicest way I can. You'd be suprised how often that works. I am telling you this warden because... well because the prisoner asked me to. Now you'll find this report to be more of a witness statement than anything.

So it was business as usual when I arrived, I was told that the man to be evaluated was in cell five and that I would be walked to cell four and we would speak through the adjoining bars... This was the first your men had gone to such extensive measures to protect us from a prisoner... But at the time I did not think much of it. When we arrived at cell four I could already see him through the bars, had long and unkempt hair and a matching beard, his upper body covered from head to toe with bruises, cuts, and scars... As an alchemist I have to know at least a little about the how every race's body works and it was clear he had suffered abuse in the prison, but the scars were much older and many looked patterned. As far as I could tell he looked to be an Imperial, but I believe he is a rare cross of Khajit and imperial... I'll explain why I believe this later, for now I will relay the conversation that took place between myself and the man from cell five (as I do not believe he was truly a prisoner)"

Myself-"So you claim to be innocent?"

Cell Five-"No"

Myself-"Than why am I here?"

Cell Five-"I am not guilty of the crime which has brought me here, but I am not innocent."

Myself-"I'm afraid I am still at a-"

Cell Five-"Ask the men who brought you what my crime was"

[I looked over at them, the first one, a brauny Nord who I hadn't had dealings with before simply shrugged in indifference, meanwhile the other, an older imperial whom I knew as Magnon had clear indications of fear]

Magnon-"He, he murdered an entire settlement of Khajits!"

[At this point the man reached through the bars and grabbed at my tunic faster than I've seen any fighters in the Arena move. Fortunately for me he also grabbed from my pocket a letter from my wife]

Cell Five-"LOOK AT ME, when you see my eyes do you see the eyes of an Imperial?!?"

[The guards had thrown open the door to his cell and tore him from me and began to beat on him, one struck his throat and he fell limp to the floor. When he had spoken about his eyes I saw them shimmer, and split into the feline eyes of a Khajit.]

Due to your men's brutality he could hardly speak, and despite my fright I was intrigued by this man and momentarily forgot to look after my own safety, so in order to hear him speak further I entered his cell with the guards at my side.

Myself-"Here" [I handed him my truth potion to wet his throat.]

Cell Five-I am suprised... You would show... Charity.... [he drinks a bit then struggles to balance drinking and breathing]
My voice grows weak, please come closer...

[I was so intrigued by what he might say that at the time it seemed like the only choice, in hindsight... I should be dead]

So I pressed my ear to his lips and heard whispers of the atrocity he was accused.

"I am not here by force... I 'gave myself up' for my supposed crime. That settlement was not only of Khajits, but also Imperials who wanted to live with the land, not on it. It was here my mother, an Imperial, met my father, a Khajit and a great hunter. Three years ago, this settlement was discovered by several imperial rangers , and burned to the ground for the 'offense to the gods' that it was. I know for one fell during battle with my father and was still alive when I arrived, he was so proud of himself and his rangers, and their 'cleansing'. My mother and father died in each others arms while I was away hunting I suppose you could say I've never stopped hunting to this day... I have systematically hunted those rangers down and brought justice to them for three years... Now I am at the last of my quarry, who upon hearing of the demise of their unit hid in this great city and became guards. The empire declared the raid a criminal act after it happened and no perpetrators were ever brought forward, and i needed a way in. So here we are now, I am awaiting execution for a crime that my guards committed... You have a family, would you do any different than I if they were lost like this?"

"No"

"These men must die, you must live to see your family again"

[He threw me aside and pulled a bone dagger from his beard, and struck Magnon down before I could blink, but the nord was prepared and they ended up in a fierce battle, that seemed to last forever, until I stood up and hit the nord over the head with the stool that was in the cell, this just annoyed him however and as the nord looked at me the man used the opening to stab him in the throat.]

"He never spoke anyway... You did not need to intervene."

"It looked as though you were losing"

"I will not debate that... I think it would be best if you waited awhile then reported this to the warden, I do not wish you harmed... You may wish to come clean about your liquor as well, to avoid all suspicion of helping me"

"How did you-"

"A drink is supposed to loosen the throat, not tighten it"

and with that he was gone. Never a prisoner at all, just an avenger who needed to be somewhere. I think I would like not to receive anymore requests from you or your prison, Warden, as I have had my life flash before me too many times in its walls.
