Playing without magic

Post » Tue Aug 16, 2011 9:12 pm

More like an insult to anyone who essentially neglects half the games content and lore so they can make believe they have muscles.

Im not bagging the warrior class, I play them myself (occasionally)
I just cant fathom what is attracting you to the TES universe that would make you completely ignore over half the premise of the fantasy. I mean wtf do you think dragons are if not magical fantasy? I just dont get it.

That's the great thing about these types of games - you can play as whatever. Just because you don't use magic doesn't mean you have to neglect the lore (hell, you can complete the mages guild questline without being a good mage). The whole fantasy thing is great, but you don't have to play as a mage to enjoy it; the dragons are hardly going to ignore you as long as you're not shooting spells. :)

I didn't mean you have to play as a mage to get the full experience, its just these "warrior purists" who scoff at the idea of ANY kind of magic like its out of place or loathsome, baffle me to no end. Even if its a perfectly minor spell for convenience or to use a new tactic, like say detect life or invisibility. I honestly see nothing in this obtuse view in a game with core foundations of both world and gameplay revolve around some form of magic.

I understand the idea of total freedom to play however you want, but even the guards and simple townfolk are capable of small feats of magic. Cutting out the entire magic system seems like a massive waste to me.

Unless I'm playing a pure mage character, I usually don't use any magic, anyway . It's truly not that hard at all... I like to look at Magic as an art form that must be learned through tedious studies and repetition, that one must be scholarly to use it... That's why I don't fancy mixed classes all that much . Though, I may try to create a spellsword of sorts.

I'll do it on eithe rmy first or second Warrior playthrough. I'm actually doing it right now with my Redguard Warrior in Oblivion, but I'm not using Alchemy either...Rest for heals, not healign in battles. I have an Orc using the Alchemy stratedgy you use.

my 1st toon will be a rogue/assassin type dude who is specialist in daggers/short sword and bow :) (Khajiit)
i will not use magic, only potions!!

my 2nd toon will prob be a mage type who just uses magic then i may try a 'hybrid' battlemage style which is a mix of weapons and magic! Soooooooo many different ways to play Skyrim!!! :D

I'm definitely going to try a pure warrior play through this time. I tried with Oblivion but combat get's so repetitive I couldn't stick to it. At least now we have different styles.

Sounds like we're going to have similar playthroughs.

I will never understand why anyone would play a TES game and not use magic to some degree... Even if you RP as an inbred warrior type with a dunse hat and runny nose or something stupid like that.

Because of the amazing replay value!! one playthrough can be all magic, another pure melee, maybe one more could be just archer and nothing else, or just blades, then a hybrid mix!! :)

I'm going to be playing a Khornanite! Magic is a HUGE no no. The mere thought of magic is grounds for being blown up into a puddle of blood and skulls by Khorne.

I suppose one good thing as well is that each character has shouts, which although magical in essence and appearance, isn't actually magic. So you could play a pure warrior and use the shouts to help. (Plus shouting at opponents to send them flying seems fitting for a bulky warrior :P).
