Experiencing a Consistent Crash

Post » Wed Aug 26, 2009 9:27 am

Now, having been a longtime player of Fallout 3, I'm used to the odd crash from the engine, considering my graphics card isn't always 100% up to the task (It's relatively high end, but nothing cutting edge, to be sure.)

I did, however, find while playing that I'm now experiencing a consistent crash that was not happening before. To be sure, I tried repeating it several times and, sure enough, the game crashed 3 times in the same relative spot.

Now, I'd been in Gommora (Probably spelled that wrong, but you know what I'm talking about) before, and came back to try and poke around for one of the quests and THIS TIME, I experience a crash every time I enter the general area of the hallway leading into the room with the stripper stage (has a sign above it that says "Brimstone" if you need a landmark point of reference.) I get this feeling this is being caused by a model error or some sort or an NPC graphic that wasn't there the previous times I entered the building. I am playing the STEAM version of the game.

My specs are...(This will look a bit sloppy because I can't copy-paste the specs page. Yeesh.)

Windows Vista 64-Bit SP2
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E7300 @ 2.66GHz 2.67 GHz
4GB RAM
NVIDIA 9800 GTX+ (Drivers were last updated last week, if anyone was wondering)

I think that's the whole shebang. I don't know what other system soft/hardware info would be needed for this. But yeah, I figured I'd post this to see if there's a specific known bug involved with this occurrence. I'll likely just skip going to Gommora 'til later and I imagine I won't encounter trouble.

EDIT: Just noticed that people are posting (far more detailed) dxdiag details. I've never had to retrieve this information before and if some one could tell me how, I can add it on to my post, if it helps.

Hey sounds like your having the exact same problems I am, with just about the same specs. If you find a solution please tell me, I will do the same.

Here's an update. Tried entering Gomorrah (Spelled right this time) again today. Managed to get into the stage area, but crashed again shortly after getting about as far as the bar. I believe I had about 2 days or so passed in game time, so this doesn't appear to be a problem time can fix.

EDIT: I'm getting the same crash in Michael Angelo's workshop (first time being in there, so no previous experience to document.) Tested and consistent.

So, I had a random idea to try something today, and it has fixed the crash problem. It isn't something I really wanted to do, but try playing the game in windowed mode. I checked both instances where I had consistent crash problems and hung around for quite some time in those areas with no problems. This could mean that, in full-screen mode, something in those areas is causing the video card (or perhaps something else) to not sync up right with the running background stuff on the desktop side of things. That's my theory anyway.
