Hate it when people call them cheats. They're console commands, not cheats.

That's what they are in most games. They're the developer commands that are left in the game when it's released.

Usually included are: a command to make a character immune to damage, so you can test without having to create the right level hero, another to provide one-hit kills, to speed up quest testing. All sorts of command to undo things that broke (like tcl to get your character out of a rock). They're left in the game mainly so that bugs can be worked around. E.g. if a boss enemy is found to be incorrectly immune to damage, there's a console command to fix it, and carry on.

A friend of mine included code in a mod (for a different game) that turned off all these commands, and got so many complaints from the players who were using them as cheats, that he replaced them all with a single command - the ultimate cheat code. You type in "win" and the game tells you you've won and terminates. Not all of the complainers understood.
