What You Would Like To See in an Animal Companion

Post » Sat Aug 20, 2011 6:40 am

I want to know, what do you guys want in an animal companion? What animal do you want? What Spells relating to that animal? What commands?

Let me know, I'm trying to get into the construction set.

A simple follow/wait command is usually fine. The akatosh mount dragon mod is a good example of more expanded commands. Maybe there could be a command to return home or go frolic in the forest and adventure on their own so you can be on your own some time as well. Certainly if you're sneaking or invisible they could match what you're doing. Maybe combat commands, actively attack, only attack when attacked, attack what I attack, or don't attack at all.

Simple cats and dogs are fun, but maybe some flying companions could be cool. Nothing big like dragons, maybe a fairy or an imp.

Multiple combat commands would be very nice. Wolf maybe, dog, mountain lion? Doesn't really matter to me, but more expanded commands would be cool. I've always wanted to send a dog companion to attack something on my behalf :teehee:. And custom animations (eating, laying down, having the companion look at you instead of into space) would make creature companions seem much more alive, but I know that would involve MUCH more work.

Emergency food supply. I'd call it "Menchi". ;)

I would like a cat familiar like a witch might have. Realistic behavior and a default behavior of following you. Not designed for combat. The magical cat would 'live' in your pack, coming out when you summoned it and returning to the safety of your pack by unsummoning. Something like a small jade statue of a cat in your pack that you activate to summon or unsummon the cat.

When I saw the title I thought you meant http://muppet.wikia.com/wiki/Animal It was probably the capital letter on his name.

Not exactly lore-friendly.

The best animal companion I could have for my archer character would be a hawk, following me and spotting enemies from a distance.

Hmm, I was thinking of a command for it to go find food, and I was originally thinking a dragon, that you had to do a quest to get, and would follow you around and you'd have to feed him everyday. Eventually he'd get bigger and bigger until he's a little bit bigger than the character and than he'd be an advlt. Halfway between his advlt transformation, he would start flying. Instead of following you everywhere you go, he'd fly, you'd also acquire spells based on him, such as a disarm, where he would fly down and take their weapon. I don't know, just my idea.

As for the other ideas, I will definitely use a lot of them. Keep this thread going though, I'm interested to build the best animal companion.

There's actually a french mod now that does something very similar to this. From what I've gathered, it starts you out with a hatchling that you have to feed. But what's really cool is that the dragon will actually change, or evolve if you will, into different dragons depending on what you feed it as it grows up. Unfortunately, it contains some illegal content in it (ie ripped).

I want. Just imagine him running up to a bandit and drumming on his head to death?

You might want to get http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9562 and crack it open in the CS. It includes a tiger companion that you can feed and it gets bigger as time (or feeding?) progresses.

Also, you could look at http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=26723. IMO one of the coolest mods ever made. It includes a constant animal companion (bear, wolf, or lion) that comes with many commands like attack, run away, defend me, wait, follow, etc.

The best animal companion I could have for my archer character would be a hawk, following me and spotting enemies from a distance.

That is an AWESOME idea. And totally simple I think. You could get a hawk (or other flying creature) from http://waalx.com/RealSwordsForum/index.php. Waalx will typically allow people to borrow his animal creations to make mounts and companions, as long as you're not simply re-releasing them with no modifications. But it's always good to ask. I got a crow for my Druid Mod Remade.

As far as how it would work, you could have a quest script going whenever you have summoned or activated your hawk. The quest script could have a one-second interval between executions. In that script, you could simply check to see if any creatures or NPCs are within a set distance from you, then check to see if they are hostile. And if so, the script could play a hawk screech sound.

I did almost exactly that in my http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=37894. While shapeshifted into wolf form, you can activate a "danger sense." If any hostile creatures or NPCs are within 80 feet, you growl and glow red for a second. Because you smell danger :)
