Unofficial "Will my PC run Skyrim" thread #13

Post » Sun Aug 21, 2011 11:41 am

With a 300W power supply, is it even worth getting a heavy-duty graphics card?

I was looking at the GTX 570, but the thing pulls 216W...I'm not really familiar with how much power the CPU draws, but I imagine that pulling away 2/3rd of the power for the GPU alone will fry my computer. Any thoughts?

A GTX 570 will not work on a 300 watt PSU, Also a 570 GTX is so big/powerful it probably won't even fit in your case. Whats your Budget and your current PC specs? (You would probably need a reliable 500-600 watt PSU to run a GTX 570 to give you an idea of how powerful a card like that is)

Here's my pc:

4GB RAM
680i Nvidia gaming motherboard
2.93 intel dual core
460gtx se graphics card
320gb hard drive
120gb hard drive

What do you think that can run it on?
And any ideas on what I should upgrade?

You will probably be able to max the game. I wouldn't upgrade the GPU as the CPU will just bottleneck it and I assume your CPU socket is outdated, but it doesn't really matter because that rig is fine for Skyrim.

My current PC is:
AMD Phenom II X6 1045T Processor (6 CPUs), ~2.7Ghz
8192MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 420 w/ 4062MB RAM
Windows 7
1TB HD
300W Power Supply
Running at 1920x1080 resolution

I'd like to keep the video card price below $200.

Well if you didn't upgrade the PSU I wouldn't go any higher than an ATI 5670 for like $70, http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=ATI+5670&x=0&y=0 If you did upgrade the PSU your options would be limitless only by size maybe, with the $300+ GPU's. However I'd let others chime in as I'm not super knowledgeable with desktop hardware as I am with laptops, so I wouldn't make a decision now.

Anyway hope I helped a little bit. Also the ATI 5670 would probably get you medium settings, again I'll let others chime in to whether or not the 300 watt psu can handle it, especially with that CPU.

My Current PC is:

Intel i-5 2.5 ghz
Nvidia NVS 4200m
4gb ram
windows 7
.5tb hard drive

Yeah, it's a laptop, but, it can run Metro 2033 on highest graphics...
All be it at a biblically low framrate.

Nehrim runs like a charm at highest graphics and 1080p

Think I could run Skyrim, or should get it for the xBox?

Do you plan on playing at 1080 x 1920, the 4200m is pretty much a 520m which will be OK for low/mid settings at a low/moderate resolution.

No, 1366x768 would be fine...

Just running it at more than 11 fps would be nice

At that resolution you'll probably be good with a mixture of low/medium settings maybe a tad more towards medium. It seems to be on par with the 9500 GT so you should OK.

That is actually perfect
I didn't even think of Skyrim at highest, that is a pipe dream.

I am going to build my own PC, but I might not have the funds until after Skyrim is released. So I will my laptop be able to play it on low settings until I get my desktop.

I don't know all the specific parts, but is a standard Dell Inspiron 1545
Pentium® Dual-Core CPU T4200 @2.00 Hz
3.00 GB
32 but operating system.

Ouch, Intel is a bad company for graphics

Sorry, but if you can run Skyrim, it will be at a low framerate at the lowest settings most likely, if at all.
I used to have an intel chipset, and Morrowind was slow on it. Oblivion was a choppy mess that made my system crash after 5 minutes.
If you can, upgrade, if you can't, you can still get it for the xbox or ps3 if you have one.

Ya, you won't be able to run Skyrim on your laptop but at least once you have your desktop ready you will be able to play it.

Hey I'm gonna build a new PC soon, here are the specs im looking at, i want to be able to play max on skyrim plus some of the graphics intense titles coming out this fall (BF3).

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz (im curious if it would be worth an extra $40 to upgrade to a phenom II x6 at 2.8 GHz)
GPU: PowerColor AX6850 1GBD5-DH Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 (budget $130-170 if u can recommend a better card that supports DVI)
RAM: 8 GB DDR3

im thinking of getting a 60 gig SSD to install windows 7 + skyrim (for fast load times lol, oblivion was too long for me) and then having a 500 gig 7200 rpm for the rest of my files, will this work well?

i plan to get a 750W power supply, is that a good wattage?

Resolution: 1920 x 1200

what do u guys think?

That puts my laptop to shame.

But yeah, I think that sounds pretty strong. I don't think you should be worrying. I never have used two hard drives like that before though, but that does sound plausible.
