Hand-to-hand isn't a skill, I know, but are the martial arts

Post » Mon Aug 22, 2011 12:00 pm

It wasn't in every game... it wasn't in any game at all.

you can enjoy it in Oblivion right now! go to a Tavern and punch someone.

Or Morrowind, just talk garbage to someone until they get mad and hit you, sure to cause a clusterfuzzums then.

re: "martial arts"

Based on previous games, even if H2H were still a skill, I wouldn't have expected more than Punching + modifications (like the various power attacks in Oblivion). Certainly wouldn't expect Kung Fu or Mortal Kombat.

(Kind of like... yes, there's "stealth gameplay", but I wouldn't expect them to put in a system equivalent to what you'd find in a fully-featured Stealth Game. H2H? Punching and kicking at most, not UFC/MMA Beatdown: Tamriel Edition. Even if only because there's just so much you can do with two triggers for controlling your two fists - and they're not going to implement a completely different control scheme for when you're in "H2H mode", so that you could do a dozen grapples/holds/throws.)

I'm hoping it will be governed by one-handed skills.

all 18 skills are major skills the non major skills are just hidden stat same as attributes so they will remain hidden and increase as player level up !
im expect the barbrawling to influence reward of somthing like a 10% damage increase
im basing this from extra hidden perks in fallout 3 such as ant might , ant sight ,barkskin ,survival guru etc

lol, pickpocketting is the last skill? lame, should have kept it under sneak.

On a semi-related note, does anyone know if there's going to be unarmed blocking in the game?

I distinctly recall reading that hand-to-hand combat would be in, but it wouldn't be its own skill, kind of like how daggers are governed by the Sneak skill. Which skill would hand-to-hand be governed? Two-Handed, Sneak?

Hand-to-hand is not governed by any skill and thus doesn't have any perks either.

Hand to hand my be more attribute based this time around. Maybe both health and stamina govern how well you can do it.

So no viable "monk" class? Boo... my second character is screw now (My Khajiit Monk) =(
I hope someone release a mod to make H2H viable, as in Oblivion and Morrowind.

They got caught up it the whole six skills to every archetype and ran out of skills.

It's likely hand to hand only causes fatigue damage, so wouldn't expect to see a dragon passing out any time soon.

I think they got to 5 skills with the thief and they got stubborn with their idea of HtH, athletics, and acrobatics being removed. I can't think of any other way something as bad as pick pocket became a specific skill when everything else in the game was about broadening skills and removing redundant features. Pick a stream either specific skills like pick pocket and short blade, or go one handed and add a skill like body mastery and have it govern athletics, acrobatics and HtH.

It will still be in the game, I could care less, though. A TES game isnt made for a strictly hand-to-hand fighter. Combat like that would get boring quick, and its unrealistic. How could you expect to defeat some of the huge creatures that will be in Skyrim with just your bare hands?

Yeah it make so much more sense when you tackle that dragon with a dagger between your teeth. Unarmed or armed this stuff makes no sense. HtH was an awesome skill which defined a few character types and now its gone.

No, it is not a skill. Yes, you can use H2H.
I will only use it when beating up some drunk nord at a tavern. :teehee:

Seems so. Sounds like the Morrowind implementation of it actually. Running fatigue down and maybe then health.

Now as there's no hand to hand skill and I doubt as some have said that H2H is in the 2 handed melee weapons skill as that doesn't make sense.

Now if this means there's still different melee attacks of any styles of melee fighting available other than a simple street/one two boxing punch options we have no idea.

I think it would be great if it was possible to learn perks(from missions etc) and maybe recieve advanced training from masters. Just an idea.

I think Martial Arts would seem kind of out of place for this part of the world, outside of grappling and wrestling that is.

OPTIONS, you say? Ok I can understand that, but realistically you would have no chance defeating any of the larger wildlife creatures found throughout Skyrim. H2H combat is really only useful for fighting against bandits and very small creatures, like rats or mudcrabs.

in real life you can fight some big cats (i forget what it was exactly) by waiting for it to lung at you and shoveing your arm down its throat, it will choke to death. that is in real life, in skyrim you are a drgonborn whose reactions and strength is better then anything real life people could muster up (even better then chuck noris :teehee: ), so you can take most animals h2h, and you could destroy any human if you are trained, h2h is a perfecty viable skill

That would be so dumb if you couldn't use hand-to-hand combat. Hand-to-hand not being a skill is fine by me though.

We've been told that we can play as a monk, so we'll just have to wait and see how that actually works
