Working trains

Post » Mon Aug 22, 2011 10:44 pm

I just noticed this...why are the powder gangers (or convicts before the escape) clearing out and repairing the rails in the Mojave? Does the NCR have access to working trains? This could open up a TON of potential for future Fallout games, being able to ride a train from say, Washington, down to Shady Sands or something. That would be a great alternative to Fast Travel IMO. This is a pretty big sign that things really have changed since Fallout 2. If they do have working trains, that means either they scored big on a lot of oil, or they scored big on energy cell and microfusion power to power things. And then the fact that we're talking about trains here, certainly means that they have cars or boats using the tech as well.
What do you think about this?

I was under the assumption that they did have trains. At the very least, they used the Rail tracks for a transport vehicle of some kind or were going to.

Fallout 3 still had a couple working metro trains, so its not that unusual I suppose.

There is no more oil left in the world, the trains probably run on microfusion like vehicles in F2 did.

Also, in F2 we take a boat to the Enclave's Oil Rig so that exists too.

And I say they should place the game in the MW with cars being mass produced. On the Suggestions thread I posted a really, really long list of ideas.

Remember the entrance before going to the Pitt? There’s that trolley with the handle that goes up and down.

Why couldn’t they have that in NV (Since it has all the rails) and you could just get on it activate and it would start moving on the rails. All you would have to do is defend yourself when you near the death claws

Once you jump off it stops.

We also have a train in Broken Steel, a Tram in Camp McCarren, as I said before there were working cars in the first game, and you used a boat to get to the Enclave's Oil Rig.

That would be good for short term transport maybe, but not really for long distance supply work.

You might as well walk with a Brahmin caravan.

Those were left unscathed by the Great War, preserving them in their functional state. I'm talking about converting the existing cars in the game into microfusion tech, which was already displayed in F2. And if I remember correctly, the boat ran on the little bit of fuel left in the boat.

Eh, you could always make it go fast.

It could be fun. When the trail splits you have to shoot a sign to change what track you want to go on. Left or Right

I thought it was implied they were using steam engines?

Boat to point lookout had a steam engine.

The trolly to the pitt was one of those hand carts you see in old cartoons.

There is absolutly NO oil left in the world by 2077, let alone 2282.

ALTHOUGH, I read somewhere that it would take about 100 years for crude oil to form in nature.

With all the people that died and were susequently fossilized in 2077, I feel like there would be a bit of oil in the ground again.

But then people would have to drill and refine it.

Uh I thought it took millions of years. Like the oil we're using today is from dinosaurs, but I'm no expert.
