YCS doing less damage than it should?

It might just be me and very hard mode, but it seems that YCS isn't doing as much damage as the pipboy states it can, especially in vats.

Example: I highlight a lobotomite's head, it says the shot will chip off half his health. BAM, there goes a fourth.

Why?

Because VH mode decreases the damage you do by 50% and increases enemy damage by 100%.

Gauss Rifle and VATS don't mix well.

I use to use the YCS/186, but now i use the Holorifle... i tested it on legendary deathclaw, and the Holorifle came out better... why? i don't know.

VH mode does not explain a huge difference between the damage VATS says the gun should do and the pitiful pinpricks it actually does.

And thank you magyaronny, i fully upgraded my holorifle and it is performing beautifully

EDIT:

okay, its on the wiki. A glitch carried over from FO3...

can be removed by modding

The Gauss/YCS is bugged in VATS. The gun does not receive the locational damage boost. So targetting the head will not do double damage - it will just do the normal damage. Sometimes it does no damage. It is caused by the explosion effect that occurs. If you are on the PC you can download a mod to fix it by removing the explosion.
