Is the Anti-Materiel Rifle worth the price?

Post » Tue Aug 23, 2011 3:43 am

I heard it's strong, and have seen many people using it. Is it worth the 8,000 caps, or is there a stronger gun that take .50 ammo, or could I just find one in the wasteland?

It's the most powerful single shot conventional rifle in the game but slow loading, so it's excellent for long range attacks against powerful targets. I've always found one rather than bought one, whether they're worth the money is up to you, personally I think they're fun rather than a game changer like the riot shotgun or gauss rifle.

I drop 8,000 caps just when i go pick up more ammunition. If 8,000 caps is really that much money to you then your doing something wrong. Especially since the anti material rifle doesn't get stocked in the vendor until you are at least lvl 16. Not counting casinos by level 16 I had 80,000 caps in my bag. And my barter remained untouched since character creation.

also if you want to find one of these guns, get the honest hearts DLC. about 1/4th of the natives have them, and you can usually walk out of the dlc carrying 10-15 of these guns. Otherwise this gun is only carried by elite ncr rangers.

I just take a silenced sniper rifle and pop a few Ranger Vet heads at a Ranger station or at Camp Golf.

I have 20,000 caps so 8,000 is not a huge amount of caps to me, but it is expensive.. Thanks for telling where it is in the wasteland though!

About 10,000 caps total for the rifle and a lifetime supply of ammo. Is it worth it or even needed? Only on VH difficulty setting, otherwise you can skip it and not instantly lose the game.

If you are willing to soil yourself by using an energy weapon the Holorifle+++ and YCS/186 both outclass the AMR.

Short version is the AMR does the most single shot damage of any Guns skill weapon. It's base/critical damage is 110/110 compared to the next best weapon the Brush Gun at 75/75 (though with the Cowboy perk the Brush Gun jumps to about 93/93).

Pluses
Very accurate and very powerful ( a sneak attack head shot can do up to 880 damage, depending on the targets DT).

Minuses
Very slow to fire, it weighs 20 lbs so it's an inventory hog, the ammo for it is also expensive and heavy and you have to have a strength of 8 and Guns skill of 100 to do maximum damage with it.

Bottom Line
My personal opinion is you're better off with the Gobi Campaign Scout Rifle or Christine's COS Silencer Rifle. With .308 JSP handloaded ammo about the only critter in the game that they can't kill with a single sneak attack head shot is Legate Lanius and even he will only take two or at most three shots.

I never pay for it, too dear, but I always go to Zion at a high lvl (30+) and the White Legs carry them quite often.
They use them like shotguns from 8 feet away, ouchhh, so be on your guard if you want them that way

I always buy the AMR. A great long range sniping weapon to kill off those pesky Death claws.

Can't remember, they get dropped by NCR Veteran Rangers occasionally after you get to level 16.
