Am I crazy? Has anyone else quit fast traveling?

Post » Mon Aug 22, 2011 7:14 pm

I still use fast traveling once in a while, mainly with the Long Haul perk, but I came to realization that most of my fast traveling was short cycling completion of quests and taking some of the adventure out of the game. After giving it some thought, it occurred to me the game designers created/enhanced features such as reloading bench, crafting, etc., in order to simulate the experience of survival in the desert and against various enemies. Fast traveling sort of defeats that sense of survival, adventure and discovery.

People have different opinions, so you aren't crazy. I for one think that Fast Travel is a staple of the Fallout series and I can't live without it.

Try playing Fallout 3 without fast travel.

When you are standing at an entrance of a subway you will flip!

NV was fun without fast travel I liked it allot. I only use it for short distance through Vegas Its a pain running through those streets.

I use fast travel most of the time in FNV mostly becasue I felt that exploring was boring, but thats only after I discover most of the locations in the Mojave.

I've no qualms with fast travel; I treat it as a forced march (that I don't have to sit through). If my PC needs to be somewhere, let him walk, and I'll resume the game once he's arrived.

Varies the Distance, if it's from Jacobtown to like Cottonwood cove.. oh hell yeah I'm Fast Traveling.

if it's from The Camp Golf to Hoover Dam... I'm walking. you'd be amazed how much XP you can get just wandering around killing stupid things.

I'm on my 7th or 8th run through of NV now and each time I've played I've used FT less and less. This time (probably my last ever run through) I'm not using FT at all and I'm loving it.

Saying that, not using FT really hammers you on the Legion assassination squads, especially around where I live (Novac). I'm currently at level 30 just doing sidde quests and they're hitting me all the time. The good thing is in the later levels they come at you with Brush guns and other cool (expensive) stuff, so loadsamoney!!!!

Believe it or not, I didnt use Fast travel in ES4 Oblivion :D. That map was HUUUUUUUGE, but to make things easy, whenever i visited a city, i completed and took over a dozen new quests. So i easily spent upto 4 Real life hours per city, usually alot more. So even though i didnt fast travel, it didnt seem like a problem, since i spent as much time as possible in a city. And then would decide which city to visit depending on which had most Quests.

Anyhow, Oblivion had horses. Fallout doesnt. I wish they would introduce the Fallout 2 car in the series :D that would be damn good.

On the OP, I still dont use fast travel in fallout, especially in FNV, since it has alot of goodies hidden around, though a massively cramped map :( Every Bethesda games map gets cut in half. According to this trend, I believe skyrims map is going to be pretty small. Of course they will try to cover it up with stupid "locations". Like how alot of [censored] boast FNV has more locations than F3, they dont seem to care if the location is Jeans skydiving school Or a race track with nothing on it except a duffel bag.

I agree not fast traveling makes for a more interesting experience. However, it does get tedious and I always break down and start using it.

I use fast travel if I know there is nothing between my character and the goal. For example, if I'm going from Gun Runners to Vault 22, I fast travel to Camp MacCarran and walk the rest so I don't need to go through Freeside and Westside all over again.

I've tried playing a game where I don't use fast travel, but I just end up getting bored and give in. I figure if its there, I might as well use it.
