Problems with Steam GotY version after uninstalling disc ver

Post » Tue Aug 23, 2011 8:35 am

I recently purchased the Steam version of Morrowind GotY from Steam when they had the Morrowind/Oblivion pack on sale. However, upon installing it and running it for the first time I noticed that:

1) Morrowind was running in widescreen by default .
2) The water texture was the same texture as the water in MGE.
3) The framerate drops from about 40fps (inside) to a dismal 10fps (outside).

I had uninstalled the disc version of Morrowind before downloading and installing the Steam version, and did use MGE to alter my resolution and to enable distant land. My only guess is that whatever changes MGE makes to the registry when it comes to MW (I'm assuming the registry because the Steam version of MW uses a completely different file path then the disc version) are now effecting the Steam version. I am hoping that someone in the know will be able to help me repair this so that I can get started replaying my favorite game ever. I would just like to be able to revert MW back to its original state if at all possible. Thank you, I look forward to any help :)

Sounds like leftovers are effecting it. Did you make sure to check places other than where mge was installed? because installs strew stuff all over the place. Dont have much to offer than that.

That said, I have to ask why bother to install the steam version if you have the disk? obviously you could use it without the disk, but its much easier to deal with as the disk version.

MGE makes no changes to the registry that I know of. My advice would be to uninstall everything Morrowind related and then delete any directory that has Morrowind files in it and start over from scratch. If you happen to be on Vista or Windows 7, there may be files, specifically ini files in your documents folder.

You may find it odd that people will ask why you want to use the Steam version at all. It makes playing with mods and third party programs a lot more complicated.

Yeah, I've checked every place I could think of, but I'll do another check and re-install. The reason I bought it through Steam is because I always end up losing my Morrowind copy and having to buy another copy, this has also happened to me with Oblivion as well. Between the two games I have probably purchased both at least three times apiece if not more. I just figured it would be easier to have copies tied to my Steam account then having to continue to buy them over and over again. What is it that specifically effects the ability to mod Morrowind/Oblivion when using the Steam versions?

It's not that bad, really, I run about 80 mods with my Steam install. The main thing is that you must re-date the BSAs to the original dates but the CodePatch does this for you in the latest version and everyone should be running the CodePatch IMHO.
