Nordic Surnames

Post » Tue Aug 23, 2011 11:11 pm

While not having a strictly-Nordic name, (Isolde) I want my character to have a Nordic (Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish etc) or at least Nordic sounding last name. I was thinking about Isolde van der Linden, (I stumbled upon it on the internet) and liked the "van der" prefix because it sounds noble, but I decided I don't like it that much. Could you offer me any suggestions?

They don't actually have surnames do they? They have "titles".

Strictly speaking they don't usually have a family name, but rather a title. Like the ones suggested in the link by Meric

EDIT: Ninja'd :P

A supposed RPG fan requiring assistance with imagination? Rare indeed.

Correct. So just think about what your character does best and get creative. :P

Take your characters name from Oblivion and add either son, or dottier on the end of it.

Indeed, Isolde Fine-Hair doesnt sound fantastic, but hopefully the first names will provide you with some inspiration of how Nordic surnames if they existed might sound or be shaped e.g "Isolde van der Tharsten"

My Oblivion character was a wood-elf.

I'm not requiring assistance with "imagination" I just don't know any Nordic names that's all. I have all her backstory ready, I just need a surname.

@Meric, that's a good idea. Van der mean of/from right? So it could be Isolde of (daughter of) Tharsten.
